4 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 57)

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 09:02 AM PDT

Welcome back, fellow mobile gamers, to these weekly summaries of the best games I've played on mobile this week :)

In this episode, I'll be covering a unique collectible card game, an awesome retro arcade racer indie game, a Tower Defense game where all towers are dice and we have both PvP and Co-op games modes, and lastly, an Auto Chess game from RIOT Games that is now finally out on mobile!

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 57 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

GWENT: The Witcher Card Game [Game Size: 3.2 GB] (free)

Genre: CCG / Card / Strategy - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

GWENT is a visually beautiful and fun collectible card-game originating from the popular PC and console title 'The Witcher'.

The game is played in rounds of 3 and stands out from other CCGs because of its focus on achieving as much power as possible rather than attacking the opponent's cards or hero to win. I especially enjoyed the focus on cards that can interact with each other to create chain-reactions.

The game has a decent player-base and while additional card packs can be bought through iAPs, the monetization seems above-average for a CCG, easily allowing free players to enjoy the game.

This is currently my favorite CCG on mobile.

Star Jolt [Game Size: 100 MB] (free)

Genre: Arcade / Retro / Indie / Racing - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Star Jolt is a challenging retro arcade racer that has us steer a spaceship racing through randomly generated levels, collecting scrap parts to achieve the highest possible score in offline and online highscore boards.

The art-style is incredibly well made, turning my phone screen into a vintage tube TV, and the tough achievements and secret Easter Egg game-mode keeps the game interesting.

Monetization is also relaxed, with the occasional ad between deaths, which can be removed through a single $3 iAP. My only complaint is the repetitiveness of the gameplay, which the indie developer seems to be working on a "fix" for through a new progression system allowing us to unlock new spaceships.

Random Dice [Total Game Size: 236 MB] (free)

    Genre: Tower Defense / PvP / Co-op / Multiplayer / Strategy / Real-time - Require Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Random Dice is a very unique and fun Tower Defense game with Dice as towers and both real-time PvP and Co-op game-modes.

Before heading into combat, we select a deck of 5 dice towers to take with us into battle from a large list of dice that we may have unlocked. During combat, we then gain mana by killing creatures, which we spend on buying and placing a random one of the five dice in our deck, or on upgrading the base power of our dice towers. Once we have two of the same dice on the board, we can also merge them to create an upgrade random tower.

At the same time, our opponent is doing the exact same thing, and every time we kill a creature on our playing field, it'll spawn on our opponent's side. We continue like this until one player has lost 3 lives by letting 3 enemies slip by our defenses.

In the Co-op mode, we fight together with another player to defeat waves of enemies, and it's a great way to earn additional towers for free and learn the best strategies from higher-level players.

Monetization happens through iAP allowing us to progress faster, but because of the generous Co-op mode, we can grind towers through Co-op as a free player until we're ready to start focusing on PvP.

The game's main issue is that the matchmaking isn't great. Something I'm confident can be patch-fixed over time though.

Teamfight Tactics [Total Game Size: 834 MB] (free)

Genre: Auto Chess / Strategy / Multiplayer - Require Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Teamfight Tactics is RIOT's 8-player auto chess strategy game set in the League of Legends universe.

The game doesn't differentiate itself much from the competition, and with 30-40 minute play sessions and a slightly less user-friendly UI than the other auto chess games on mobile, Teamfight Tactics feels like a game mostly for existing LoL fans.

The game isn't bad at all, but it's late to the market.

As in all auto chess games, the monetization is perfectly fair, focusing purely on vanity cosmetics gained through a battle pass subscription.

[Video Demo] I am building a game to educate us about the food we eat

[Video Demo] I am building a game to educate us about the food we eat 🍣 🌰 🥑🥝 🍎 🍇

    WIP Video Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvK38L7dcVQ

    Why I am building Foodology?

    • In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 650 million were obese. (source: World Health Organization)
    • 40 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese in 2018. (source: World Health Organization)
    • 8/10 Top Android food games are:
      • promoting unhealthy food habits (ex: featuring burgers, pizza, doughnuts, etc. in their logo)
      • Full of iAP (ex: buy coins for $100)
      • About serving customers at the counter (ex: create dishes by following a series of steps, click on eggs, click on toast, serve to customer, get money) which I would argue is not very educational.
      • stress inducing since you have to follow the steps as fast as possible
      • mindless (not sure if you are learning something useful)

How I am tackling the problem?

    • You learn about food by sorting it based on a given criteria (calories, fat, protein, etc.)
    • There is one-time iAP purchase of ~$1.99 to unlock difficulty levels (No Ads, no tracking, etc.)
    • There is no end goal (ex: become richer, earn more coins, etc.)
    • The game is designed to be relaxing (ex: soothing music)

What is the long term plan for the business?

    • Finding the middle ground between educational and entertainment games
    • Become sustainable building small, contained, casual games then move on to create more complex edugames (ex: geometry for high school, etc.)

What can you do to help?

    • I am really looking for feedback about the game as well as general feedback about the business and how to approach marketing
    • If you find it interesting enough, you can subscribe to be notified when the game is launched at https://www.producthunt.com/upcoming/foodology/

    Idle games with cards?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 07:52 AM PDT

I've been really enjoying Adventure Communist, Royal Idle and Idle Frontier - is there any more games like this? They have 3 rolling goals at the top and each time you complete a goal you get some cards to help upgrade things. It's slightly RNG. Just wondering if there's any more like these?

Lockdown multiplayer games for large groups?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 08:50 AM PDT

Any ideas what a large group of people could play with iOS devices as a social event during lockdown? Ideally something very casual like Monopoly where 8-12 people could join a party and work through a session while a Zoom or WebEx is running in the room.

My first attempt at a super difficult little arcade game (looking for feedback)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:58 PM PDT

    Hey Reddit, this is Slanted

    Download https://apps.apple.com/us/app/slanted/id1089047755

Its a little arcade game I've been working on for the last couple of years, I spent a lot of time finding the right style, difficulty and tweaking the gameplay until it felt just right to me.

The goal was to create a game that really challenges you when you first play it but after some time turns into a relaxing experience that you could play for hours without noticing.

Today Im happy to share it with you, I'm still working on improving it, and getting some feedback would be really helpful.

So give it a try and let me know what you think, I hope you enjoy the game.
