Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:23 AM PST I've currently acquired an old mid 2012 MacBook from my girlfriend. We wiped it last night to fresh so that I can have the laptop to use. However, the OS has gone back to a much older version and I am unable to download most popular apps like Spotify etc because of the OS version. I tried to update via the App Store but it still doesn't update to a current enough OS. Is there anyway to update my MacBook further without using the App Store or am I confined to this version? Run 4K @ 60Hz external monitor Posted: 01 Mar 2020 10:43 PM PST I bought Samsung space monitor (32R750) yesterday and I have some troubles with 30Hz For some reason, I can't change it to a 60Hz refresh rate. I did try display patch, but I still got only 30Hz Did anyone had a similar problem and if so how can I fix it? MacBook Pro (2017 13"), Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640, connecting via HDMI (if possible I would try to avoid the solution where I need to buy USB C to Mini Displayport) [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:23 PM PST Hello everyone, I recently broke one hand and I decided to give dictation a shot. As I was unable to make it work inside the softwares that I use for work, I wanted to turn it off, but for the life of me I cannot understand how to do it. I have disabled it several times inside system preferences, but the floating microphone icon just won't go away as you can see from my screenshots. Do you have any idea on how I could fix it? I am totally clueless and it's really pissing me off. Thanks in advance for your answers, any help will be really appreciated! [link] [comments]

Anyone willing to test my Java application? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:31 AM PST I'm learning Java just as hobby and have written a simple application. I want to test it on macOS but unfortunately JavaFX is incompatible with macOS virtual machine. The application includes a executable jar file, JRE and a script to launch the jar file. Its source code is available on GitHub. You can compile the jar file on your own, download JRE and using the script to test if it'll run successfuly on macOS. If anyone is interested, I will PM you and send you the link. [link] [comments]
Trouble reinstalling my mac os macbook air mid 2013 Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:29 AM PST My macbook air mid 2013 is dead! Please help this noob here out :( I try to reset everything so I went into recovery mode and format then reinstall, continue. I waited like 10min and it restarted, showed a internet earth forces me to fill in my wifi, after that it ran 50% then blackscreen, nothing else happened, i tried to press the power button once but nothing happened so it seemed it was still running but no fan noise, no light from the keyboard. I then forced it shutdown and turn it on, blackscreen for 1 min then a folder with question mark showed up. I forced shutdown and went into recoverymode but this time it immediately show the internet earth and I then filled in my wifi, it ran very fast to 50% and blackscreen again. I dont know what is happening and what are the solutions I can seek for my problem now. I hope any1 here can shed me some light on this. Thank you very much!!! [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Mar 2020 05:17 PM PST I've noticed my iPhone switches to night mode before my Mac does. Does anyone know why/what they base the night mode times from? I assume it changes throughout the year, but it's currently past the official 'sunset' time and my Mac is still in day mode. It doesn't bother me a bunch but I thought it was sort of weird. I also notice my dynamic wallpaper doesn't perfectly align with the light out during sunset. No big deal, but again it made me curious how the times are set up. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Fix butterfly key cap and mechanism Posted: 01 Mar 2020 12:04 PM PST Hello everyone. I'm pretty sure everyone has had this problem yet I'm not able to find any solution to this on the internet. As perfectly seen on the title, I'm having problems with my space bar on a 2017 MacBook Pro. I had these problems before, so I already knew what to do: take out the key with help of a plastic card. The problem is that when taking it out, I accidentally also took the actual mechanism out (that white thingy), and now I'm not able to get it back in the keyboard. I asked a friend of mine (who is an Apple engineer) for help and she somehow got it working, but only if I press on the middle of the key, if I press on the sides it doesn't work. She said that I should take it to the Apple store, but if they find out I took the key by myself, I might not get it fixed, so I'm doing this to have some solution I can rely to in case I don't get it fixed by Apple. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Mac won’t load up one user account Posted: 01 Mar 2020 08:47 PM PST Have an iMac with Yosemite on it. For some reason when i try to start up my computer after i get the login screen, when i click on one specific account to start up, the account never opens and just shows a loading screen perpetually. The Mac will load up and start other accounts but not this one. I have also tried to switch accounts through fast use switch but still just gets stuck loading the busted account. I've tried resetting SMC, resetting PRAM, booting in safe mode, running first aid on the drive — all nothing. Any helps would be greatly appreciate. Thanks. [link] [comments]
How to disable internal Bluetooth on old iMac (and only use newer BT 4.0 usb dongle)? Posted: 01 Mar 2020 09:32 AM PST One of my computers is an old iMac 24" (I think it's from 2007) running El Capitan which I use in the kitchen mostly for streaming TV and light web browsing. I have this small BT4.0 media remote control for controlling volume, pause, etc. The media remote did not work at all with the built in BT on the iMac, but I had this tiny BT 4.0 usb dongle that I plugged in to the iMac and I was then able to pair and control volume etc. The problem is that often when the iMac sleeps, or gets rebooted, it goes back to using the internal BT adaptor and the media remote can't connect any longer. I have to go through this dance of disabling BT, removing and reinserting the external adaptor, reenabling BT etc. then maybe the media remote will start working again (but this process seems non deterministic). Is there a way to disable the internal BT adaptor but still leave BT enabled externally? [link] [comments]
Voice Control box keeps unchecking itself - REALLY WEIRD!! Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:59 PM PST I just upgraded to Catalina. In System Prefs. I went to Accessibility and "enable" Voice Control ck box. It asked for Admin password which I entered and the box is checked. The admin password is correct and it accepts it. Within a few seconds, the Enable Voice Box unchecked itself and it doesn't work. I've tried multiple times. The mic works and has been set to both automatic as well as Internal. The box just uncheck. I have waited to see if it needed the download but never saw that but may have missed it. Either way several attempts and no go. OS is all up-to-date. I try logging on with a new user ID on my MacBook Pro it worked. Downloaded and all. How can i fix on my normal user ID ? Thoughts? [link] [comments]
Installing Catalina from scratch & Bootcamp Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:57 PM PST My apologies, long post but need help :) I purchased a used 2018 MBP on Friday and it was a fresh boot/new user setup into Catalina and the SSD show 1.98/2TB remaining. Through a series of events I've installed Parallels to test some of my CAD modeling and rendering software, only to confirm my suspicions that Parallels can't handle them like my 2014 MBP running Bootcamp. So I went to install Bootcamp from my Windows 10 Pro 1909 ISO and the process failed at some point. From what I can determine from my research the ISO was too large and couldn't be read by Bootcamp. My computer then failed to start over and over until I entered recovery mode and removed the BOOTCAMP and EXTENDED OSX partitions created by BC. Then I was finally able to boot into Catalina again. From here I wanted to remove all data and basically start over fresh. Using CleanMyMac X, I removed Parallels and all my install files but the SSD was still showing the available space at 1.88/2TB available. This isn't a huge deal but at this point I believe I've removed everything and I'm missing 100GB! I started up again in recovery mode and removed the MacintoshHD-Data volume and erased the MacintoshHD to get the full 2TB to be available. Now first problem occurred and I wasn't thinking. I removed the DATA HD which probably had the Catalina info on it. Question 1: is there a way to just get a fresh install of Catalina or do I need to install High Sierra and then upgrade? Question 2: should I format my SSD as APFS or something else if I'm planning on using Bootcamp? Question 3: I also have an older Windows 10 Pro March 2018 ISO. Should I use this and upgrade or did I just do something wrong with the 1909 ISO? I read an article on TwoCanoes about splitting the ISO but this supposedly isn't a problem any more. I'd obviously like to go with the 1909 as I don't want a lot of junk filling up my hard drive. THANKS ALL YOU AWESOME MAC USERS! Edit: I've also been experiencing internet connectivity issues; almost 100GB of downloads this weekend might be upsetting my ISP! So if there's a way to fresh install Catalina from USB this would be best as I don't want the internet to cut out half way through install. [link] [comments]
How do you set-up a Canon printer that does not have the driver listed in MacOS? Posted: 01 Mar 2020 01:08 PM PST I have a Canon OIXMA MP240 printer/scanner and I haven't been able to use it since the Catalina update. When setting-up the printer driver, no Canon printers are listed. Also the Mac driver is no longer listed on the Canon site. I understand it's "old", bought it new in 2008, but until the OS update I had to faults with the printer. All help is appreciated. [link] [comments]
Making a Windows 10 ISO stick in NTSF format; can't copy/drag contents to the stick Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:27 PM PST I want to make a Windows 10 USB stick in NTSF format on my Mac because FAT32 is small for the ISO of Windows. Now I have downloaded the NTSF for Mac app. The NTSF makes the USB stick successful but now I cannot copy / drag the contents of the ISO to the stick. How should I do this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Mar 2020 07:40 AM PST I need to upgrade my mid 2015 MacBook Pro from Sierra to at least High Sierra to use current tax app. Meanwhile I have Parallels 12 for some Windows apps I need for work. I am now hoping to install Sierra as a VM to maintain use of some apps that won't work beyond Sierra (while I consider options). The problem is finding a Sierra installer that will be recognized by Parallels. I did find one that gets the InstallSierra.app, but won't work. It says it is damaged and that isapparently due certificate issues. There is also a dmg that opens to an InstallOS.pkg, but that goes straight to installing with no app access. So none of the instructions I have found online will get me to setting up a boot able thumb drive. Solutions? [link] [comments]
