| Posted: 03 Mar 2020 08:35 PM PST Hey all I'm cross posting this from r/macOS in desperation. I have 3 external hard drives containing Time Machine backups of various dates from an iMac over a few years of use. I'm wanting to copy off only the unique data from each drive, and not all the hard links, and then use Gemini 2 to scan and remove any duplicate photos I may have, so that I can place all my unique photos in one place without duplicates. The problem is that there's a lot of variance in data between the dates, for example Pictures > Album 1 will contain 20 photos at backup date 1, and 10 photos at backup date 2. I don't want to have to extract each date's backup with hard links, and scan dozens of copies of large sets of hard-linked data with Gemini 2. Is there a way I can extract only all the unique data from all 3 of my externals, in order to cut down on data transfer and scanning time? Should I simply clone each external to another drive with Disk Utility or SuperDuper!, and scan each clone with Gemini 2? Will it work around the hard links in finding my duplicate photos? | Suspected Hairline Crack in Rear Camera Lens on iPhone X Posted: 03 Mar 2020 06:42 PM PST Had my phone sitting face down on a table today and noticed that there was what appeared to be a hairline crack going partway across my rear lens. It starts at the edge of the lens over the top camera and slants up slightly, ending about 3mm from the other edge. It doesn't go all the way across. My fingernail catches on it when gently scraped over. The phone hasn't been dropped, is only carried in pockets by itself, and has tempered glass on the front and the same model of phone case that I've been using for 5 years (Incipio Dual Pro-used on previous phones too). I don't have AppleCare (two friends that work for Apple have both told me that it's not worth it) an am nearly a year out of warranty. I'm curious about my options here. Oddly enough, despite being in front of the top camera lens, the crack doesn't appear to affect photos, however I have noticed that it seems to take longer to auto focus and is more challenging to manually force the camera to focus as well. I love this phone and given that it is 256gb, I'm not keen to replace it anytime soon. [link] [comments]  |

| Posted: 03 Mar 2020 03:18 PM PST Hopefully the title is enough to help get this started.... I upgraded from an iPhone 5 to an 8 over a year ago. I gave the iPhone 5 to my kid and set it up with wi-fi only. Got them an iCloud account and they've been able to text me and the wife with no problem for the last year. Last week, my kid suddenly couldn't send or receive texts. I've been messing with this phone for about three hours and cannot figure it out. When trying to get iMessages to work in the iPhone settings, it says "iMessage Activation. An error occurred during activation. Try again." Some notes on what I've tried:

I'm basically wondering if I would able to locate an (elderly) family member's iPhone (using Find My app on my own iPhone) if they do not have a data plan and are not on WiFi?
