    Catalina Catalina Catalina

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 09:23 PM PST

All the talk is about Catalina and its bugs right now, and how if I download it my Mac will set on fire.

How is 10.15.2? Does it get rid of most of the bugs reported? Or is it still a relatively rough update? I am running a pretty old update on a 2014 rMBP 13", currently on 10.12.6. Need the laptop for uni work, am I making a mistake if I update?

How do I export only edited photos? I want to keep all unedited photos in their original HEIC format. Must I do it all by hand??

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 02:30 AM PST

I fear there's no hope. Hundreds are edited and thousands are unedited. So the goal is to:

    1. Export all modified photos
    2. Keep all unmodified photos as HEIC a.k.a. "export unmodified originals" so I can save file space and quality.

The only solution I can think of is going through every single photos by hand to see if it's edited or not. Is there some other way to automate the process or am I just stuck in the Apple straight jacket?

    Thank you for the help!

Safari reverting to previous web page

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 02:41 PM PST

This issue has been ongoing for a few weeks. Links work fine, but whenever I manually type (or paste) a new address into the bar, it takes 3-4 attempts for Safari to actually load the new page. It just keeps refreshing the old page the first several times I try.

    It's becoming very frustrating.

    Anyone had similar issues?

    Safari extension cyrillic to latin

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 01:54 PM PST

Before Safari was upgraded to v. 13 there was an extension I used to easier read web pages written in cyrillic alphabets (Serbian, Macedonian and Russian), it was called Latinka.

Basically it replaced cyrillic characters on web sites with their latin counterparts.

Does anyone knows for an elegant solution for that matter?

I suppose there is no option for Safari at the moment, is there an extension for Firefox?!

Chrome is out of the question!

Possible to bridge my 2 Thunderbolt 2 ports to get 40Gbps?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 05:27 PM PST

This might be the wrong place to ask this but just thought maybe someone here would have more info on this? I'm little more than an enthusiast who likes to tinker with my Mac. But I was wondering if anyone had heard of a way to combine the 2 ports to utilize faster speeds like connecting to a 40GbE switch?

Or plug both in to a drive with 2 thunderbolt 2 ports, and if that transfer speed could combine?

Maybe even do 2 thunderbolt 2 -> 1 thunderbolt 3 and keep the speed?

Backup macOS state before upgrading for easy restore if upgrade is bad?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 08:04 AM PST

My 2015 mac is still sitting on Sierra. I'm just a fan a stable software and not solving problems I don't realize I have so I sit on the OS that the machine came out of the factory with for as long as possible. But it's getting to a point where programs aren't being stabilized for this OS anymore so it's time to move on.

Is there a way I can just take a snapshot of my machine rather than a backup of just the files? Time Machine won't work for that, right? That way I can restore to what is working for me easily if the upgrade doesn't workout. Thanks!

Font Issue? Dropdown Lists in Forms in Safari and Fonts in Firefox don't work properly

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:59 AM PST

I recently did a clean install on my new 2019 MacBook Pro 16 inch. I got most of my files back from a combination of iCloud, Dropbox, and Time Machine. I did not restore from Time Machine back up but individually imported files/folders.

I needed to get all my fonts back so what I did was dragged fonts from the various Font folders in my backup drive time machine drive (System Library, User Library, etc) into Font Book so it can install them. After doing that some of them still weren't showing up in Photoshop, so I tried to re-install photoshop (via Adobe cc) but that didn't work. Then, I deleted all the fonts from Font Book and followed these instructions on how to clear font cache and databases: http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/08/clear-font-caches-databases-mac-os-x/

So next, I dragged all the fonts back into font book from my back up Font folders in Time Machine (system and user font folders inside library). The Photoshop fonts started working, but certain elements of Safari and Firefox aren't functioning properly.

The issue I have in Safari is that I cannot see the text in dropdown lists in forms. Here's an example from United Airlines login page. See screenshot : http://prnt.sc/qjd6to

Also sometimes when opening a new tab in Safari that tab's text won't appear, then it'll repeat later. See screenshot: http://prnt.sc/qjdbax

In Firefox certain fonts don't load properly. See screenshot: http://prnt.sc/qjd914

Here's what I've tried to do so far in addition to the aforementioned.

    • Repair disk permissions
    • restart Safari and Firefox
    • reinstall Firefox
    • Reinstalled Mac OS Catalina 10.15.2 (obviously restarted computer)
    • Shut down laptop
    • Booted safe mode
    • Reset NVRAM
    • Restored Standard Fonts in Font Book
    • Cleared cache folders in library

Whenever I searched for solutions online it was always web developers who had coding issues and not an issue in the browser, so I hope the Reddit community can some to the rescue. 🙏

Encrypted backup to samba share: alternatives to TimeMachine

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:04 AM PST

    Hi guys,

Title is self-explanatory, I'm looking for alternatives to Time Machine that will allow automatic encrypted backups to a samba share. I'm new to MacOS (job requirement); in my GNU/Linux machines I use either duplicity or DejaDup. I would prefer a GUI app since I plan to share it with non-tech savvy colleagues.

    Thanks a lot!
