TimeMachine Mirror to AWS S3 or Glacier Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:40 PM PDT I've got a 3TB external hard drive that I'm using for TimeMachine backups. The version of the TimeMachine backup that I'm using has everything in a single Backups.backupdb folder. I'd like to make a mirror of that off premises to the cloud that automatically synchronizes to Amazon S3 or Glacier. Has anyone done this? Any advice on how best to accomplish this? Many thanks for any feedback. [link] [comments]

Mac OS version of Steps Recorder? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 12:58 PM PDT So my elderly grandparents switched from an old Dell running Windows XP to a used iMac running Mojave and I was wondering if there's a program like steps recorder built into the Mac so I can make them easy to follow guides on how to do whatever they need to do on it? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Unknown keyboard is listed among Bluetooth devices Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:31 PM PDT I have noticed that an unknown Bluetooth keyboard is listed among the Bluetooth devices in System Preferences of my Mac (10.14.6). How much should I be worried? What do you think I should do? [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:49 PM PDT Hi, so I used to have 2 partition on my mac. The first one, which is 200 GB, had macOS installed on it and I had a 50 GB partition for linux. I decided to reinstall macOS Catalina Beta again so I formatted both partitions and mistakenly installed macOS on the 50 GB partition. Is there anyway to merge both partitions or I have to reinstall macOS on the other partition? Thank you [link] [comments]
Help Troubleshooting External Boot SSD on late 2015 iMac 5k Posted: 29 Sep 2019 05:07 PM PDT Hey all, As the title says, I'm hoping to find some tips for booting from an external drive. I'm pretty familiar with actual hardware components having kept my 2008 Macbook alive and kicking 11 years, thanks to some TLC and user-upgrades, before it was time to lay her to rest and do the same with a non-retina 2012 MBP. My primary desktop is a late 2015 iMac purchased in 2016 (27" 17,1 ; 32gb ddr3; 1TB internal hdd) located in my home office and there's also my ryzen gaming pc and hackintosh, both of which were build projects. However, I'm a noob when it comes to software and settings. I love the iMac, but this HDD has made it agonizing to use for actual work, knowing how much more performance I'd get with a boot SSD. Normally I'd have no problem cracking open the machine and swapping out drives, but the thought of shattering my display panel is terrifying, so an external solution it is. My current solution is set up using the ' Akitio Thunder2 Dock' connected to iMac over thunderbolt2 and a 480gb SATA III SSD connected to the dock over eSATA. This worked great and after selecting the new SSD as my startup disk, my read/write speeds were effectively double that of the internal HDD. However, this is where it starts to get murky and I'm unsure how to best proceed forward. I had assumed that selecting a new startup disk would effectively make it so the iMac always booted up from that disk, but after another restart it booted back up off the internal HDD. I'm guessing there's some extra steps I need to take to make this happen consistently, but I've had no luck searching around for the solution. In addition, the ssd I was using as my startup drive was a clone of my macbook os rather than a TM backup of my imac (due to there being more data on the 1TB hdd compared to the target SSD) and I'm wondering how/if I can utilize a TM backup on a target disk with less storage. It's not a huge problem as I'm able to drag over any files I absolutely need on the startup disk, but my iMac's version of Safari was still running 'uBlock Origin' while my Macbook had been updated, so I'd like to keep the safari version from iMac if possible. This isn't an immediate issue, but I plan to replace the sata ssd with an NVME ssd over thunderbolt2/3, so I wanted to find out what I'm currently doing wrong prior to setting up a "permanent" solution. Any tips, tricks, advice, points in the right direction would be much appreciated. Thanks, folks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:37 AM PDT How do you think Project Catalyst will play out? As a user, it was one of the features of Catalina which excited me most when it was announced but I haven't heard a whole lot about it since. As I don't use an iPad (only iPhone and Mac) - I would love to see more Apps come across, but I guess it depends if developers choose to do so or not. I understand that a lot of iPadOS/iOS Apps are made for a touch screen but I can also think of so many that I use which would be fine on macOS. [link] [comments]
Discrepancy in free disk space? Should I reformat my entire MacBook Pro SSD? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:17 PM PDT I went to backup my iPhone which would be a hefty file size, approximately 60GB. My MacBook reported about 100GB free so I figured I was in the clear. iTunes reportedly said that I didn't have enough space on my computer to complete the backup. I go to disk utility, and it says that I only have about 60GB free? System > About still says nearly 100GB. What's going on? [link] [comments]
Desktop Folder as "smart folder" Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:36 AM PDT Question for the power users: Can I make my Desktop Folder be "smart"? I want my desktop to only show files I've tagged as "in process". So my desktop only has active projects on it. Obviously, just making a Smart Folder in user directory and naming it "Desktop" doesn't work; the default Desktop folder can't be renamed. Is there some terminal magic I can apply to do this? I suppose it's simplistic to think there is a "smart flag" that could be set on the default Desktop folder...? [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 05:04 PM PDT I'm getting another keyboard and decided to get another language for fun, to look at, but I need to make sure its still usable lol. P.S. what language should i get? japanese looks coolest imo. edit; maybe not japanese, there is a big 1 key instead of a `. maybe this is a bad idea [link] [comments]

iCloud app specific folders not working? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:41 AM PDT So in the iCloud folder on Mac, there exist folders for specific programs like TextEdit, Pages, Number, etc. From the research I've done (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6769964), these folders serve to provide aliases for their specific files which may exist elsewhere on iCloud for easy access. For example, if I have a text file named "work.rtf" nested deep within some folder on iCloud, iCloud would create an alias (shortcut) to this file and place it in the TextEdit folder, along with an alias for every other .rtf file on my iCloud so I don't have to go digging for them. The issue is, my TextEdit folder in iCloud does not do this. The only files it contains are the ones I put in there myself. So either my understanding of the purpose of these folders is wrong, or my iCloud is not processing these files for whatever reason. Can someone weigh in on this? [link] [comments]
Videos on Reddit will not go full screen Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:36 AM PDT Every time I attempt to watch a video on reddit on full screen the screen comes up black what's a quick solution to this problem? (MacBook Pro 2015) [link] [comments]
Reminders App not syncing between iPhone and Mac? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:53 AM PDT Hi, for some reason I can't get my reminders app to sync between iPhone and my Macbook. Every other app seems to sync perfectly. I tried refreshing, uninstalling and reinstalling on my iPhone, de-selecting iCloud sync and re-selecting it... Yet it's like they are in two different worlds and neither will sync with the other. [link] [comments]
No internet connection on multiple devices, but App Store can access updates… Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:49 AM PDT I've bot been able to connect to the internet on my Macbook Pro for over a week. Primarily I'm connected to wifi (5g), but even though the connection is made I get timeouts or "server can't connect…", even when I try tethering to my phone. I can however access the app store and download updates, but no internet access across all browsers. I'v tried deleting my network setup, restarting the router, changing DNS settings, different devices, and nothing. Any other suggestions? If you need more detailed info please let me know.
