iPhone 11 review from life long Android user Posted: 26 Sep 2019 08:08 AM PDT Hi all, I'm new to this sub and this is the first time I've ever taken time to write a review of something. Prepare for shoddy writing. Truth be told switching to an iPhone was a spur of the moment decision. I've always had Android devices enjoying the open source freedoms and looking down on people who would use a proprietary device. It's something I've done since getting my first Android device which was the short-lived and ill-received Sony Xperia play. It was a piece of garbage that I had to have replaced twice before I was eligible to upgrade. 3 Notes and a Pixel later and I was ready for something different which brings me to the here and now. I bought a iPhone 11 Pro Max. My first impression went something along the lines of "Wow this is pretty slick!" It's snappy, looks good, and has a great camera. I especially love the zoom dial that pops up to help with fine control. I did, however, run into issues moving my contacts and such from my Note 9 over to my iPhone. The "move to iPhone" app simply refused to connect which left me backing up my pictures and such to my PC instead which was no biggy. For my contacts I finally realized they were backed up to my Google account which made importing them as simple as adding my Google account to my iPhone. Moving passwords was easy as I use Lastpass to manage them which left only my 2 factor authenticators which suck to switch over no matter what type of phone you use. Finally having everything moved over so that I no longer have to carry 2 phones around, I finally get to enjoy using my iPhone as a true daily driver. The keyboard is intuitive but takes a bit of getting used to over Gboard. The thing where you can hold the spacebar and move the curser is probably my favorite find. I also really like the custom emojis though mine tend to look like a leprechaun (it's tough being a ginger whose favorite color is green). Installing apps goes smoothly once I got used to authenticating every single install which honestly annoyed me at first but in the end is probably for the best. One of the happier surprises I've found is that my VPN automatically reconnects once I'm off of trusted WiFi. Hallelujah that's something my forgetful self has longed for forever. The battery lasts me all day even though I use my phone heavily and I LOVE the wide angle camera. It lets me get the close up pictures I could never get before. My first real difficulty was getting my Samsung S3 smartwatch to cooperate with my iPhone. I had to finally reset my watch before the iPhone would connect to it. By this point I'm convinced that it's a conspiracy between Samsung and Apple to be uncooperative with each other. Now that it's connected, though, it seems to pass notifications over better than my Note 9 did. The few times I've had reason to commune with Siri she seems to understand what I say which is a miracle considering I have a reasonably heavy southern accent. My only disappointment with Siri has been the lack of Spotify support. I could switch to Apple music for a similar price but I hate the idea of starting over as I've invested a fair amount of time setting up playlists and such. Also I'm lazy, which factors into a lot of my problems. Carplay integration seems to work much smoother than Android auto did. Android auto seemed to be fairly finicky for me as it flat out would refuse to connect at times. I haven't run into this at all with carplay the few times I've used it. I do however wish there was a way to setup a threshold for charging while connected. I don't like the idea of my phone charging the whole time I'm driving on a long trip. The biggest difficulty I've run into was backing up pictures to my unraid server. My wife is a long time iPhone user and thus had filled her iCloud to capacity long ago. Saying she takes a lot of pictures is an understatement of incredible proportions. Every time she upgrades I have to remind her to backup her pictures which she usually puts off until the night before she has to turn her old phone in. We tried backing them up to the computer traditionally via a lightning cable which worked fine until her phone timed out and locked. This normally wouldn't be an issue if she did backups regularly instead of once a year like she does. I tried file explorer and simply copying everything over WiFi with SMB. While this should've worked the connection kept timing out which I believe is an issue on the server end. I also tried ftp which gave me errors as well. Finally I found Photosync and was able to back everything up directly to her PC over WiFi. It took 6 hours, but it did work. I'm going to set her new phone up with Plex camera upload so it will backup when she connects to home WiFi. I tried this as well at first but it seemed to have trouble with the huge amount of pictures. Now for the things I miss from Android. I truly miss the customizability. Getting to change themes and icon packs to get just the right look for how I'm feeling at that moment. I miss all the free and easily accessible ringtones and notification sounds available. I'm sure there's some great apps available that provide such things but being new to iOS I'm wary to try them as a lot of them look pretty sketchy. I miss having the stylus from my Note 9. I have big fingers and sometimes have trouble clicking particularly small buttons. Finally, I miss being able to sideload apps without having to jailbreak my phone. While it's something I'm sure I could manage, I simply don't want to. It's an unnecessary risk on such an expensive device which I heavily rely on. All that being said for now I'm happy I made the jump. iOS is simpler in many ways to the benefit of the user. I've enjoyed the features I've used and I'm sure there's a great many more I just haven't found yet. Please share any suggestions or questions you may have. I'd like to make the most of my iPhone experience. Thanks for taking time to read! [link] [comments]
iPhone 11 Pro Max can charge at over 20+ watts Posted: 26 Sep 2019 07:37 AM PDT This is from over at the Macrumors forum, posting it here to maybe get some more traction. http://www.chongdiantou.com/wp/archives/38751.html CDT tested various USB-C PD chargers from 18w to 100w and all chargers charge at around 9V with the exception of the 29w Apple charger which is 14.77V at 1.72A which comes out to 25.40 Watts. A Macrumors user has concern if the 29W charger at 14.77V would cause any harm to the battery, I also has been using the 29W block for the past year and my XS Max battery health is now at 90%. Would charging at 14V vs 9V make any difference for battery degradation? [link] [comments]
First Koss Headphones Commercial shot on an iPhone 11 Max Pro Posted: 26 Sep 2019 08:18 AM PDT What's up guys. New Year. New iPhone. Wanted to share my first commercial shot entirely on an iPhone 11 Pro Max. Last year I shared a commercial for Koss Headphones the company I work for on an iPhone XS Max, learned a lot since then, got the new phone and obviously had to shoot another one. Shot on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, wide lens, Zhiyun Smooth 4 3-Axis Gimbal (FYI you can't use the ultra wide lens on most current phone gimbals as it's so wide it shows the actual gimbal arm in Frame) FiLMic Pro, 4k @24fps FiLMic Extreme, edited in FCPX, exported as 4K Apple ProRes 422. (YouTube on Safari won't display 4K fyi - use Chrome) used the iPhone IBS as well as FCPX stabilization on about half the scenes. Feel Free to bug me with any questions. I don't ever use this account but I'll try and stay active on it if anyone has any questions. Watch: https://youtu.be/fBcuRGR3OAM [link] [comments]

How to make an iPhone ring all over the house? Weird question from the grandson of an 85 year old Posted: 26 Sep 2019 10:01 AM PDT A bit of a weird question. So my grandpa (Age 85) has used a home phone for years. He now wants to get rid of it and use his cell phone full time, due to the home phone getting spam calls almost multiple times every day. He has an iPhone SE, and isn't too terrible senile (can learn, albeit a bit slowly), and he presented me with a unique question. What solution would be available in order to make it so his cell phone would ring in a system around his home? He wants it because sometimes he can't hear the sound from the actual phone ringing and sometimes doesn't pick up on the vibration. I have thought of an Apple Watch (which I'm not sure he would wear) and other than that just a system of bluetooth speakers. Anyone else have any other systems or advice they know of? Big thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Posted: 26 Sep 2019 10:08 AM PDT Anyone with the Otterbox Symmetry: does it extend over the bump? It feels weird laying the phone down directly on the bump...I feel like the camera lenses are going to get scratched or something. [link] [comments]
Is it possible to use the aux jack on a DualShock 4 controller for audio output on an iPhone 7? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 09:51 AM PDT I'm trying to play some games while my phone is charging and I'm trying to figure out whether it could work but I've found nothing in settings or from web searches. Is my quest in vain or is it doable? [link] [comments]

Will the iPhone 11 replace your every-day, carry-around non-phone camera? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 09:49 AM PDT For those of us that still carry around smaller dedicated cameras (or even if they aren't small, but I don't mean cameras for professional/studio use), will the iPhone 11 replace that? As an iPhone 7 owner and not having owned anything newer, I did not believe the image quality from this phone was good enough for me, so I always had a small mirrorless camera to carry around (used to own the Panasonic LX100, Fuji X70, and now Panasonic LX10). Even though the iPhone 11 is still a small sensor, less manual control, and bokeh effects are mostly fake, the sample photos I've seen are pretty darn good and making me consider selling off my small camera, or maybe even my Fuji X-T2....(not used for professional use). Let me know your thoughts :) [link] [comments]

QoL suggestion for iPhone X onwards: Posted: 26 Sep 2019 09:04 AM PDT When swiping down from the top right (to open command Center), the time should also pop up in the middle. When swiping down from the top left you have to pull all the way down but from the top right it's so much easier. (This is mainly to make life easier when watching videos/films) [link] [comments] |
