Apple is shipping $1000 phones with 64gb base storage while Samsung base storage starts at 256GB.

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 02:25 PM PDT

So I decided to tune in on Samsungs new Note 10 launch. I won't lie I was super salty when I saw Samsung base storage is 256GB with the note 10 at $950. Kinda feels bad considering I paid $999 for my XS with 64GB. I am hoping Apple bumps their base storages across all their products.

Samsung reveals Galaxy Note 10/10+ - What are your thoughts?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 01:22 PM PDT

READ: Apple users, including me, have always 'invited' Android users to read about the keynotes, and look at Apple's latest offering in hardware and software. This barely happens on this sub, so I would like to take this as a test to see how things go.

Samsung took a leap there. As an Apple user, what do you think of the latest Notes?

    Apple community accounts

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 08:28 PM PDT

Genuinely curious, I was browsing through Apple Community for technical issues and there were so many high level (L7+) accounts replying with promotional contents. How did they even gain to 10k+ points, but I can't view their previous replies? How many years does it take to achieve an account like that?!

Most importantly, should I really trust those accounts with their recommended software? Many seem to be from the same companies.

Anyone else in the U.K. notice that Apple Pay has appeared in iMessage in the most recent public beta?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 07:37 AM PDT

I'm hoping this means Apple Pay Cash will come here soon, makes sense though as they'll need a bank for Apple Cash and Apple Card.

Apple health is a headache at times but also so powerful

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 11:07 AM PDT

I love how customisable the health app is in regards to what data is allowed to be read and sent by each app it connects too . But this is also its biggest annoyance . For example if you install apps like strava or map my run and allow them to use default permissions , you're going to end up with duplicate and incorrect data being shared to the health app. Strava is the worst being that if you use map my run and that sends a run result to health app , which then sends it to strava , which then sends it back to health again, The end result is a spam stream of inflated duplicated data . To me Apple was all About convenience and this isn't its biggest strength . On the flip side the data you gather over time is valuable and in depth and as long as you set permissions correctly you'll begin to get a great picture over time. Just don't like me forget to allow everything to read and write on your primary fitness tracking app and only read on your other apps. Otherwise you'll get a continuous cycle of useless data.

Anyway this was just a ramble about my experiences learning how to use the health app correctly . Good luck

Intel's new 10nm processors are obviously the reason why the 12" MacBook is dead

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 10:20 AM PDT

For those who haven't been paying attention, we now have Intel ARK pages for the first of Intel's 10nm Y-series and U-series CPUs.

The Y-series CPUs are the lowest TDP Intel develops, and has been 4.5W or 5W in previous releases. These processors were used on the 12" MacBook, and are used in a custom higher-TDP configuration in the new MacBook Air, which the latter can handle because it has a fan, whereas the 12" MacBook didn't.

Now, in the move to quad-core on the Y-series, Intel has jumped from their previous 5W TDP to a much higher 9W TDP, with the ability to downclock to 8W on the i3 and no options for downclocking on the i5 or i7.

It is unlikely that the 12" MacBook, which was probably already pushing it thermally, would be able to handle what is effectively a 100% increase from the 4.5W TDP of the Broadwell processor it was designed against. The new MacBook Air has a fan, presumably because Intel had already communicated this change to manufacturers ahead of time when Apple designed the new MacBook Air. This effectively means that the processors that the 12" MacBook would need are no longer being developed by Intel (or AMD, for that matter), which means that the product is doomed, as least as long as Macs stay on x86.

On a slightly unrelated side-note, these new processors are really sweet for the Air though. The quad-core design will give a serious boost in multithreaded workloads, the jump to the new 10nm iGPUs and the jump from Intel's UHD GPU line to the superior Iris line will probably get around a 100% graphics improvement year-over-year, and the jump from 2133MHz LPDDR3 RAM to 3733MHz LPDDR4X RAM, as well as support for 32GB RAM configurations, will also offer significant real-world improvements across the board.
