iPad Pro 2018 12.9 review from a Surface Pro user

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:45 AM PST

I've been using Surface Pro 2017 as a note taking device and I purchased 12.9 inch iPad Pro recently and here's what I noticed.

    What iPad does better:

    1. Pen experience is better on iPad Pro but not because the handwriting looks any better. N-trig has caught up a lot between Surface Pro 4 and 5. It's a nice pen that has more rubbery feel and precision wise better than iPad. Where it comes apart is the effort required to write. The sharp edges on the pen hurt on long note taking sessions and more friction on the nibs means more strain to make it move. HP pen tips sold separately felt uncomfortable.
    2. Grounding was a huge problem on Surface because on some outlets, the pen would not work.
    3. Bad battery life, averaging 4-5 hours + the grounding issue + 5 hour lectures = disaster.
    4. Heat: actually nice because Surface Pro comes with a free heater to rest your hands on at cold environment.
    5. Onenote: clunky mess compared to notability, especially when moving objects. Some person at Microsoft thought that simply touching anywhere after using a pen to bring up software keyboard was a good idea. Also buried undo and redo together in a submenu and reverted back after few months.

    Here's what iPad does worse:

    1. What's a computer? Something that has a proper file system. Hasn't improved at all from the last time I've used an iPad, the iPad 2.
    2. Can't download files in the background reliably.
    3. It is a damn shitty laptop. Safari brings up mobile pages. Apps are scaled up iPhone apps that don't have the full capability. (Edit: obviously not the awesome iPad-oriented apps like notability)
    4. "Who needs a stylus?" - Jobs, "Me. By the way, who needs a mouse?" - Cook

Tldr: It's the best note taking device in every way imaginable, and the shittiest $1000 laptop in short of chromebooks.

Looking For a Nice Pencil Grip/skin (1st Gen)

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 10:46 AM PST

I'd like to keep the pencil the same size if possible so it can still fit in my ipad case. Nothing bulgy or protruding. I don't like the feel of rubber either. The bare apple pencil is just so glossy and slippery.

If it's on amazon prime then i'll throw in an extra cookie.

Duet Display disables Adobe software from using dedicated GPU.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 12:43 PM PST

I've been loving Duet since the last update. But lately I've noticed Adobe software like Photoshop are super slow and couldn't figure it out. I looked in my performance settings and saw that they were using my integrated Intel GPU and not my dedicated AMD Radeon 560 GPU. Still couldn't figure out why, until I turned off Duet Display and bam, Photoshop using my Radeon like it's supposed to and back to being snappy and responsive.

Anyone else have this problem? 2017 MacBook Pro and a 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9".

Sucks because I use Adobe apps constantly and really need the extra screen space on my iPad.

Maybe I'll just suck it up and buy Luna Display.

Sell me on the 11" or 12" 2018 pro

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 10:37 AM PST

I am really split between these two sizes, is there any reason I should get one versus the other? With the larger screen am I able to run or do any more than I am with the smiler one?

New 12.9 Pro to replace 2017 model - struggling to find matt screen protector and other accessories.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 06:02 AM PST

I have a 2018 12.9 model and I'm looking to buy some new accessories to keep it safe (as I'm very clumsy.)

I use the iPad primarily for art, and I need a screen protector, I previously used this Tech Armor one but they don't seem to make a replacement for the new model. Wondering if anyone else has recommendations - I'm using it for paper grain sensation rather than actual protection

Also trying to choose a case which will cover the corners, previously had this Jtech one but was wondering if anyone knew how this style compared to the more expensive ones like this and if they are actually worth the money.

App Recommendations: Pixel-art and 3d Modelling

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:43 AM PST

    Good morning everyone,

I've had a quick look around the web and on the app store, but haven't turned up much that satisfies.

I'm using my iPad Pro to replace my PC for digital art and illustration. Procreate has nicely satisfied painting needs, but I haven't found anything for pixel-art or basic 3d modelling.

Do any of you have any you would reccomend?

    Thanks for any help!

p.s. the 3d modelling i'm talking about isn't anything heavy duty, like high poly sculpts on zbrush, but more blocking out things for drawing reference/perspective studies and the like.

    Amazon Video on the iPad

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:54 PM PST

It states on the Amazon website that Prime video support for iOS devices go up to SD only for downloads and SD and HD (720p) for streaming. It iOS quite sad to not be able to view the shows I watch on amazon in higher resolutions since the screen on the iPad Pro is amazing. I really hope Amazon starts supporting full HD streaming and downloads soon. I remember when only The Note 7, S8, and Note 8 had Full HD support for Android devices, with every other Android device stuck at SD. I don't know why there is still a Streaming and download limit if they already got rid of it on Android.

Decided to get get the iPad Pro 2018 1TB WiFi

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 07:05 PM PST

I ordered this unit and will receive it in a couple of days. I decided to go with this unit since it was one of the most recommended devices for digital painting.

I initially considered Wacom's Mobile Studio Pro 16 but saw how it still has Paralax and Wacom's stubby pen design makes using the titlt function feel unnatural.

So now that I own an iOS device once again after more than a decade(iPod Touch 2nd Gen), I'm looking for some Apps that will be useful for my intended use for this device. Also looking for some answers.

-Aside from Procreate, any other softwares I can consider?

-Any good software for 2D animation?

-Any recommendations for a versatile Movie Player app? Something that can play a lot of movie file formats. Especially MKV files and properly load multiple audio tracks and subtitle tracks properly. In android I use MXPlayer which has been pretty solid. -Do I still need to go through iTunes to place my music files? Does this support FLAC or is it only resistricted to ALAC?

-Is Jailbreaking still a thing or is it from what I've understood, dead for years. Not really a big deal if it is dead but I would love to do some customization. Even on Android, google has been restricting vital Apps from working on a rooted device which becomes a hassle.

-What is a good durable case to prevent bending? Something not too thick like an Otterbox on phones. Just something that can "help" reinforce the known weakness.

I'll be honest here. I don't like Apple's restrictive nature when it comes to their devices. It's the reason I went Android for a long time since there's a ton of stuff you can do with most android devices. Even unrooted, an Android device still has a lot of variety for function. But it's a compromise I am willing to take to be able to use one of the superb tablets I've seen for digital drawing.

I still think Apple be damned for switching the iPad to USB C and not allowing a lot of Generic USB devices to work with it. Including a generic USB Mass Storage. Nor did the execution of the headphone jack was needed on a device this big.

So the most important question. Are there any work around to viewing files for USB-C external hard drives? If there isn't, has Apple responded to this baffling limitation?

It's a no brainier that this functionality should be existing in this day and age especially for "Pro" product lines. Accessing files on my Android Phones(LGv20, Note 9/Note 3) to offload huge files quickly has been so convenient. Cloud is another way of backup but I consider it as a backup of a primary backup.

Sorry for long winded post. Thought it'd be appropriate to get some ideas here. I appreciate any tips and feedback regarding iOS.

Any way to get older versions of apps for iPad 2?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 03:18 AM PST

As the title indicates... How can I get older versions of apps that are compatible with iOS 9.3.5? I did some Googling and people were suggesting I get the app(s) via iTunes first so it shows up in the purchase list on the iPad,, which provides access to older versions of the app. You call me dense if you like but I can't find the bloody app store on iTunes. So I googled it to get the app link to trigger from the browser so it'd open to the right page on iTunes store. But there's no download or buy option... Virtually every app in the app store requires iOS 10 or greater and that's fine - but I feel like being denied access to older versions of some of the apps is really shoddy unless the older version has security vulnerabilities.

    Any suggestions?

What do you think the next iPad Pro models will feature?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 09:02 PM PST

With the recent release of the 2018 iPad Pro's it's got me thinking a little about what next year's models might feature.

We just got USB-C, near bezelless design along with a magnetically charged Apple Pencil. Right now most people are complaining about price, lack of difference between the 2nd gen Pros and structural integrity to name the most prevalent ones.

Knowing Apple and based on my own observations they are likely to go along the lines of what they did with the iPhone 6 and 6s. I am excluding newer IOS revisions because those are fairly iPhone and iPad related. I am sure a lot of people would love the option of MacOS or at least a lite-version to run on the iPad, but I still don't quite see that with Tim Cook in charge. Maybe the next Apple CEO will venture into that territory.

    1) I believe apple will add some weight to increase structural integrity first of all. I can't imagine Tim Cook releasing future iPads/Pros without addressing this issue.

    2) Screen resolution may increase or some new feature regarding the screen will be added. Maybe not screen resolution per say since Apple tends to stick with a good resolution for a few generations sometimes, but features I can see similar to pro-motion from revealed in the 2nd generation Pro models back in 2017.

    3) New standard of RAM. One thing I saw in the new pro models was more RAM when purchasing the higher end models. People seem to really be liking the faster CPU, but some are disappointed that not all 2018 Pro's have 6GB RAM. From a financial perspective I can see 6gb becoming across the board for the pro models.

    Wish lists, but possibilities:

    A) More features around the USB-C port. The new iPad Pro can be hooked up to a monitor and I think charge other devices. I don't see why they wouldn't eventually add a first party option for storage.

    B) Screen resolution and possibly going AMOLED (pretty unlikely) at least for the pro models.

These are just some thoughts but would love to hear from other people.

I’m very conflicted about purchasing the iPad mini 4, any advice?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 05:44 PM PST

    Hi!

I've been super conflicted about purchasing a brand new mini 4 from the store because it hasn't been updated and has 4 year old software. The price hasn't come down either.

I don't know much about Apple, or how their things work. I have an IPhone 8 but that's about it, so I'm not very knowledgeable.

I've heard rumors about the mini either being retired, or updated this year but with no real answers.

I love the mini size and I don't want any other tablet or iPad size. I don't mind having the mini 4, but I'm wondering if I'm getting ripped off by paying $400 for something that hasn't been updated.

Is it wiser to go the pre-loved route? I've found a couple in the $180-$200 range. I don't mind getting something used, I'm just worried about possible issues with battery life with a tablet that's been on the market for so long. There would be no way to tell if it was bought a year or few years ago and has 3 years of abuse on it.

    Any thoughts? Thanks!

    Help with external keyboard shortcuts

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 07:51 PM PST

I am trying to assist a teacher who has a student with special needs. They are using a standard iPad with a Belkin wired keyboard attached to the lightning connector. What I need to do is have a way from the keyboard to begin dictation. Currently the student has to bring up the on screen keyboard, press the dictation button on screen, speak what they need to, minimize the keyboard, go back to the physical keyboard to manipulate the cursor. The biggest issue is the website reads back to the student what they dictated and corrects their grammar. They are unable to type words on the keyboard and use it more for manipulating the cursor and making some basic changes. In the end, I just need to know if there is a custom keyboard shortcut I can map to enable the student to begin and end dictation without using the on screen keyboard.

    Thanks for any help!
