Just picked up the new iPad Pro. Crazy how many apps haven’t updated for the new screen size. Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:12 AM PST Is there any way to 'stretch' apps to fill the screen? Similar to the option when you install an iPhone app on iPad? [link] [comments] |

Siri "Take me to ..." takes too much time in Do Not Disturb while Driving Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:49 PM PST If I want Siri to navigate me somewhere, I find that Siri takes way too much time before it actually launches maps. Here's what I mean: "Hey Siri, take me to Safeway." "OK, one option is Safeway on {...}. It's open 24 hours, but it only has {...} stars on Yelp. Is that the one you want?" If I interrupt Siri in the middle of this, "Yes", "That one", "Take me there", Siri fails out. On the other hand, if I ask Siri the same question while not in Do Not Disturb while Driving, she says "Ok, one option is Safeway on {...}. Does that sound good?" Much shorter. Any way to make Siri not take so damn long? [link] [comments] |
My Apple Support horror story involving the current 2018 battery swap program. Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:29 PM PST So I wanted to take advantage of the cheap battery swaps that are happening until the end of the year. They are only £25 and my iPhone's battery health was at 82%, so why not right? I signed up for a mail-in service on the Apple Support website because I don't live near an Apple Store. They charged me and all and I was expecting everything to be fine. Except when it got time to finish the online form and submit it gave me an error and I had to call them on the phone and explain what happened. They told me I had an international iPhone and because of regulations I wouldn't be able to send it in the post. So they make me an appointment at the nearest Apple Store. I take a 1 hour train journey to the Apple Store, I give them the iPhone and everything is going great but they tell me I have to come back and pick it up on a different day. I explain to them I live quite far away and it costs me a lot to travel back and forth but they say there is nothing they can do. Fine. I accept it. A few days later I'm back at the store, I pick up my iPhone and all is good. That night I am on reddit and I notice that something is seriously odd about the screen, there are lines at the bottom and I can see some pretty intense backlight bleed in one corner. I get on the Apple Support chat and after 30 minutes with an Advisor he tells me that after looking at my pictures he is absolutely certain that they screwed up at the Apple Store when they were putting it back together. He tells me to go back to the apple store and tell them the same thing I told him and they would fix it. I schedule an appointment, travel for the 3rd time, I get there and show it to them and the lady says she's not able to see anything wrong with it. I explain to her that it's incredibly visible on a dark background and when you're in a less lit-up room.. Apple Stores have better lighting than a fashion show so of course she couldn't see it.. so she tells me there is nothing they can do because they can't see the issue and tells me to escalate the issue on their website. I travel back home and I get on the apple support chat and for 30 minutes an Adviser made me repeat this entire situation 15 times and she kept telling me "well I have to charge you for a screen repair because that's the only way my system allows us to proceed." I get pissed and I ask to speak to a manager. After waiting for 10 minute he takes over the chat and tells me to schedule a call so I can escalate the issue (this is the 2nd time they tell me to switch support teams in order to escalate the issue." The call is tomorrow. I am absolutely exhausted by all this shiz. TL;DR: Went to Apple to get my battery swapped for £25, they ended up breaking my screen and made me travel 3 times to an Apple Store that is on a 1 hour train journey away. Apple Support Adviser lied to me that they would fix it for free only for store employee to tell me that they won't fix it. So far have lost 8 hours of my life traveling back and forth, £40 on train tickets and the £25 battery swap broke my display. Total cost of this battery swap: 25 + 40 = 65 and now I have to get a screen replacement so another 152.44 = £ 217.44 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:34 AM PST Massive thanks Reddit for the warm reception I received last year when I previewed, PiPer, a free and open source browser extension that lets you watch video Picture in Picture. Today marks the first major release and features initial support for Chrome and closed caption support for Safari. I can't wait to share this with you all and I have loads more planned!

Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:05 PM PST I received my MacBook air today and the webcam is terrible. I know it's suppose to be 720p but it looks worse than that. Do you guys think they will update it? I'm not sure if it's a software issue or just the camera itself. [link] [comments] |
I wish that iOS Widgets, Notifications and Control Center were all on the same UI plane Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:13 PM PST Now that I have a X-type iPhone and swiping up from the bottom is used for app launching, the relative arrangement of Widgets, Notifications and Control Center seem even less intuitive. I think they should all be on the same UI plane, side by side, and "above" the apps and home screen. This may essentially mean bringing Control Center "down" and taking out access to Notifications from the app tier. Further, I think that swiping down on either side of the sensor array should take you to Notifications, but that a curved swipe from the top (similar to app multitasking) would take you to Widgets or Control Center, depending on the direction of the curve. This also keeps swiping from the left or right side free for app-specific use. Thoughts? Anyone else in the least have the same reaction to the way we currently access these three iOS states? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:25 PM PST Hey guys! Next year I need a new computer for school, and it's pretty much come down to the 2017 MacBook Pro (without the touchbar) vs. the new 2018 MacBook Air. The two seem pretty similar, but I'm having some trouble deciding regardless - mostly, I'm worried about the keyboard on the Pro, but I like the fact it's a little faster with a brighter/more vibrant screen. Likewise, I like the fact that the Air has got the newer, supposedly more dust-resistant keyboard and TouchID. I'd be using it daily for work (mostly the Office suite, some Photoshop), browsing the internet/Netflix and some light gaming (nothing super intensive, likely just some Heroes of the Storm/Hearthstone/whatever), as well as some drawing software. Which one would you recommend I get? [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to run OSX on an external SSD in iMac? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:20 PM PST My iMac has a 1tb hdd, 24gb Ram, i5, 27", and it's super slow. I'd like to swap the hdd for a ssd but I don't really want to open the iMac I'm afraid to break something. Can an external ssd be used instead? I'd leave it permanently plugged but don't know if usb 3.1 is not really fast enough to take advantage of ssd speed? Cheers [link] [comments] |
Locking phone while on Group FaceTime ends the call Posted: 02 Dec 2018 01:35 AM PST Is there anyway to prevent this or is this just some oversight by Apple? Locking the phone on any app except the messages app in the call screen ends the group call. [link] [comments] |

How to get the media scrubber on Spotify app | 2018 MacBook Pro Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:37 PM PST the media scrubber shows up on the Touch Bar for the 2018 MacBook Pro but it doesn't show up in Spotify free. Is it possible to bring it [link] [comments] |
Idea for Uber Compatibility with Apple CarPlay Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:39 PM PST Uber and Apple should introduce a software update where they make Uber compatible with Apple CarPlay, so that drivers can mirror the app onto their car's touchscreen. Mirror the maps that guide them to riders, call riders, and rate riders all from their car's screen, rather than using a smartphone that is on a suction cup holder on the windshield, which can be distracting to the driver. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Do any of you actually like stacks? Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:41 PM PST I'm trying to figure out who the target audience for this is, so hoping someone out there can provide a different opinion here because as it stands, I feel like stacks are designed to be as unhelpful as possible. I was so excited, and I ended up turning them off after like an hour, so CMV! Here's what I want from stacks:
