Welcome to r/iPad 2.0. List of changes and upcoming tweaks.

    Hi everybody.

I've recently joined the mod team to help fulfill the potential of this subreddit. For the past three days u/Antrikshy have been working on some changes and upgrades to make it a better place for everyone to discuss, share, and learn.

We listed for you all the changes we made, and the upcoming ones:

    Changelog:
    • The subreddit has been visually and structurally redesigned in both old and new (just today) version of Reddit!

    • We updated the rules. Please find and read them in the sidebar. We realized the subreddit was saturated every day with the same exact questions. With the same exact issues, or with the same youtube videos. So the biggest change here is that all "What should I buy" "Is it compatible with" "Can you plug a hard drive" "Can my microwave truly recharge my iPad's battery" type of posts will be removed and redirected to the General Discussion Thread, and all app requests and suggestions, will go to the dedicated App Suggestion Thread. We will let some of those posts live once in a while however, so that when you're search for those topics you won't see a year old list of apps, but a more recently updated one.

    • You can now add flairs to your post, such as Review, Guide, My iPad, Discussion, Question... This will help with finding the content you want, or filtering the one you want to ignore.

    • The r/iPad chatroom is now live. You can discuss anything iPad related with your fellow redditors. Enter at your own risks by selecting the bubble icon next to your username at the top of the page.

    • This thread and the App Suggestion Thread are now live, but the last one will probably soon be replaced with a more focused "What Should I buy" megathread.

    • Starting now, you won't need to mail us to report something, we'll be constantly look at reports and taking actions if any rules are broken. Thank you to all of you for reporting, it makes our job much easier.

Soon to come in a 2.1 update.

    • 'What should I buy' Megathread
    • I'll be working on an FAQ/Wiki in the coming days/weeks.
    • Updated Auto-Moderator.
    • Wallpaper Wednesday Megathread.

    What we need from you:

Help us answer everyone's questions in the two new megathreads, for a cleaner, less cluttered r/iPad subreddit.

Some banned members or bots are downvoting every single post, all the time, often keeping them from getting the attention they deserve. Counter this by upvoting more unless you really something, obviously

If you have any questions, suggestions, critics, we'd appreciate it if you shared those with us in the comments below or via Mod Mail. We know we can't please everyone but we'll try.

Any ideas to improve this subreddit are more than welcome.

Thank you for reading all of this,

/u/Totoro12117 and the rest of the mod team.

    iPad heating up on Netflix

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 10:28 AM PST

I am just curious if it is normal for the iPad Pro 2018 11" to heat up while watching netflix? Or is my ipad pro faulty?

What's the framerate for ipad pro screen recordings?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 07:34 AM PST

In my layman's understanding, fps can't be above screen refresh rate. So, if the promotion refresh rate drops doen to 24hz in a screen recording, will the fps drop too? Or does the ipad stick to a set framerate in screen recordings?

I tried one and lumafusion said it was 30 fps, but I know in the past my videographer said the fps of my screen recording was variable. Is there any way to customize this? I know there's an accessibility option to limit refresh rate to 60 fps, but not sure if this would keep it constant or not.

The Otterbox Symmetry 360 for the iPad Pro 11" (2018). (Quick initial impressions.)

    Posted: 16 Nov 2018 07:56 PM PST

Hi guys, I know we've all been looking for a good iPad case that covers the edges and accommodates wireless Apple Pencil charging. I am really pleased with this product and I'll be giving some quick initial thoughts after unboxing and installing it on my iPad.

I mainly use my iPad as a sketchbook and for editing photos on the go. I don't do a massive amount of typing on it.

The Symmetry 360 case comes in a very simple slide-out cardboard box, nothing fancy. Inside is the case, with a foam sheet installed where the iPad would be, and a piece of paper for instructions.

Build quality is very good. The grey is rather industrial looking though, and I would've loved some colour options. I would've chosen black or white anyway - equally boring options imo, so grey is alright.

Front flap is a nice smooth PU with a shallow leather-ish texture. Interior of the front flap is a velvety felt lining. The same materials are used for the flap that secures the Pencil (I love this feature!).

Edges are well protected with about 3mm of hard rubber surrounding the iPad. There's no felt lining for the edges. The rubbery material is nice and grippy, and will help prevent accidental drops. Cutouts have been provided for the 4 speakers, mic and USB-C access. The USB-C port cutout is generously wide, so using 3rd party charge cables and wired dongles are certainly possible. Note that repurposing USB-C hubs that attach flush to your MacBooks will not work on with this case due to the 3mm rubber border. Sucks because I bought a hub just like that. Power and volume buttons have a slight raise and add some resistance to being pressed. Good if you dont want them to be pushed accidentally while in the case.

The entire back is a sheet of thick polycarbonate/arcylic. I find it adds some needed rigidity to the case, and after the recent videos about how flexible these new iPads are, I'm quite happy that it adds some thickness to the profile to prevent any accidental warping. Camera cutout is good, and the back is sufficiently thick to recess the camera a little and prevent the lens from scratching should you place it flush against the table and slide it around.

    Here are some photos!

Edit: I really prefer this over the Smart Keyboard folio due to the added protection. I plan to travel with this iPad quite frequently, so this case helps with 1) Edge and rigidity protection 2) not losing my Pencil in my bag. Weight-wise I'd say its similar to the Keyboard folio. Sits well on my lap. The flap does get a bit distracting when you're using the iPad since it's just, uh, flapping around, but I think it's a minor annoyance that I'll get used to. /u/SackityPack pointed out below in his comment that the flap can be flipped backwards and out of the way. See the paragraph below for some example images. Will be returning the Smart Keyboard on Monday and saving some cash.

Edit #2: The pencil flap seems to be able to secure itself backwards via magnets. Very nifty! It allows some footprint reduction when using it in Sketch mode like this.

    3D painting app?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 08:38 AM PST

I'm getting a color 3D printer for Christmas, and I'm going to be downloading various models from Heroforge and the like. I want to find a good app to import the model and allow me to paint it before printing. Any suggestions?

New 11” Pro - Candy Crush in-app purchase won’t work

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 09:15 AM PST

So here's a weird one... I moved from a 10.5" iPP to the new 11" a few days ago. It's freaking awesome. The only issue I've had, though, is that I can't make in-app purchases in Candy Crush. It's just that one app. I can purchase new apps in the App Store, and I can do in-app purchases in other apps. I just can't in that one game. I've checked and rechecked my payment info in Settings, but I can't get it to work. I can buy stuff in Candy Crush on my Note 9 and have it sync over to my iPad, but that's pretty inconvenient. I've restarted, deleted the game and re-installed, logged in and out of it, and everything else I could think of. Any other suggestions? Error message: https://imgur.com/a/ZWBepPX

How is Lightroom CC on the new iPad Pro?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 02:29 AM PST

    Hey all,

I just got the 11 inch iPad Pro and have some questions about Lightroom CC

As a background, I am a light hobby photographer that uses Sony mirrorless cameras to shoot photos of family and very occasionally landscape

Because I don't edit photos too often, I've been using the Sony Capture 1 version, which is a pay once forever (well kind of..) deal. I really don't like subscription based fees and I felt like Lightroom CC would be a huge waste of money since I would be editing a batch of photos like once every 3 months

However, I've always felt editing on the computer was a bit limiting (mouse not being too accurate and slightly jittery + non-portable) and am quite excited for the possibility of editing photos on my 11 inch iPad Pro

I can imagine loading my recent photos on here and editing one or two with my apple pencil when I have a quick breather

But then it doesn't seem like Capture 1 has an iPad Pro version

Long story short, I have two questions:

    1. How does the fee structure work for the IPP Lightroom CC? Same as the desktop version?
    2. For those who have some experience using it, what's your impression/thoughts? A bit limiting than the desktop version? Good enough? Better? Not as flexible as you'd think?

Any other thoughts you had while using the Lightroom CC would be greatly appreciated :)

Is there a way to transcode video on the iPad?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 07:31 AM PST

I ran into a workflow issue that I normally relegate to my PC via VirtualDub/Avidemux but given how fast iPads have become and how they are being touted more as "Pro" machines, I wanted to see if there was any way to:

    1. Take a video file encoded saved as an MKV (encoded as H.264 (x264)) (saved on iPad local storage - I don't want to use a converter app on a PC just to be clear)
    2. Trim/Clip a part of it.
    3. Export said clip as an mp4 for use elsewhere.

I've seen scattered reviews with the A12X being able to handle 4K video export but I can't really seem to find anything about Handbrake or FFMPEG being placed on the iPad.

Is there an app/workflow that anyone could suggest to accomplish this?

    Anyone having issues with bending?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 12:47 PM PST

I had the 2017 iPad Pro and I loved it. Sold it to buy the new one but I'm waiting to hear some reviews. The reviews complaining that the new iPad Pro isn't a laptop don't bother me. That's not why I'm getting it. I want it for drawing, notes for school and media.

I've just been reading that people are having issues with it bending for average use. This has me concerned. I can't afford to buy this and have it break just because I'm carrying it around in a backpack or something. I plan on having a case but it's still concerning to hear. Are these articles and reports just noise? Or is anyone actually having issues? My first time posting here, sorry if I broke any rules.

I realize it’s probably blown out of proportion, but will the smart folio add any notable resistance to prevent the iPad from accidental bends in a backpack? Or should I get a thicker case?

Brand new iPad Pro has 7/8GB of 'Other' storage. What is this?

How can it be so high already? I set it up as a new iPad so cache etc should be low still. How can it be so high already?
