Apple missed a trick with the Pencil 2

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:34 AM PDT

Now that they've removed the charger at the back, it's the perfect opportunity to put in another sensor in the back of the pencil for things like an eraser function. Double tap is fine, but why not both? Limiting double tap to two functions is better than one, but I'm still going to use more than two functions.

If I'm reviewing a contract at work, I'd prefer to have a red pen for notes and a yellow highlighter on the double tap switch, but still allow for flipping the pencil around on the fly and erasing a note or a highlight. If I'm sketching, why not allow pencil and pen on double tap, and still have the eraser at the back for quickly making changes without messing around with layers?

My frustration is that this is such an obvious feature that could be implemented, that I'm sitting here wondering if I should just wait another year for iPad Pro 2019 and Apple Pencil 3. I don't want to drop a grand on a device which will have downgraded quality of life in a year.

This subreddit could use a sidebar with helpful links.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:19 AM PDT

I recently bought an ipad and pencil and have been having a blast figuring out what it can do.

I came to this subreddit hoping to find resources on how to get the most out of this device. I want to know what other people are using it for.

The focus here seems to be apps. Finding cool apps is great when you know how to use this device well. It isn't the best starting place though.

So, I would like a sidebar with helpful links called "How to get the most out of your (new) iPad".

Found a 3rd party case that utilizes the new smart connector and closely resembles the aesthetic of the Apple case.

    Mechanical keyboard?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:09 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm doing some research for my mom. She's totally blind and uses an iPad Mini with VoiceOver like a champ. Thing is, she wants to write and to stop having to dictate emails. She's had a garbo Windows 8 laptop for years that she'd do her long-form writing on, but that finally bit it.

I let her try my Apple keyboard and she hates it. She hates the chiclet-like keys and how flat it is. She used some janky usb external one with her laptop because she hated the built-in one on that too.

We were out and I let her feel a gaming keyboard (I think it was Razer) and now she's all about the mechanical ones. She likes the satisfying click and the deep-set keys.

I'm having trouble finding a mechanical keyboard that'll work with iOS and doesn't make you hit an Fn key to get a question mark - which is a whole new problem I didn't expect.

I've considered getting just the camera adaptor but paying $70 for a dongle just makes my skin crawl.

I was looking for the OG Das Keyboard for the simple joy of seeing a blind lady typing on am all-black keyboard to a totally dimmed screen, but can't seem to find it (and don't think it's compatible anyhow).

Any ideas or suggestions would be awesome. Cheers!

iPad Pro arrives Wednesday Nov 7. But status still in processing?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:05 PM PDT

A bit new to apple products. I bought the 12.9 inch iPad Pro and Apple Pencil a little after it was announced. Apple Pencil says its being prepared to ship, but the iPad Pro is still in processing. Is this normal? Will I receive the iPad Pro on launch day? Don't know how these launches typically work. Thank you.

To those upgrading, what do you do with your old devices?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:25 AM PDT

This is especially pertinent to those who replace their iPads with updated versions every year or so.

Do you trade it in? Recycle? Regift it? Trash it? Pass it off to family or friends? Or do you just hoard all your iPads in a closet somewhere?

Are your devices usually damaged by this time anyway?

And if you are upgrading to the pencil, are you doing anything with your old pencil?

I got the Pro 10.5 last year but I'm intrigued by the bigger screen and smaller bezels. Anyone else picking one up?

Question on new 2018 iPad pro

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:31 AM PDT

One usage scenario that came to mind.

This is a pro device - let's say I want to spend a long time typing up word documents or power points...

If I'm using a Bluetooth keyboard, can I also use Bluetooth headphones to listen to music while I work? I understand this is possible with BT 5.0

Or, is Apple forcing us to buy AirPods/Smart Keyboard in order to listen to music while working?

iPad Pro. Lightning to USB-C. Is that a huge piece of news?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:27 AM PDT

I was telling my friend about what's new has Apple announce a day ago and one of things I mentioned to him was that new iPad Pro got USB port, finally.

His reaction was "Mehh, as if is even worth mentioning, couldn't you already transfer image from iPad to another display…?". But I heard that this is just crazy for Apple to do this.

So, guys, I am curious, what's your opinion: is changing Lightning to USB-C on iPad a big news for you? Can it potentially change your workflow? Does it open any new possibilities?
