Poll: Would you accept a slightly thicker 2019 iPhone in return for three benefits?

I like apple, but hate their policies

Apple employee: it's $69 to get a new battery case for your AirPods

Me: well do I keep the old case? Apple: no, we keep it.

Me: well how much is it if I lose the case to replace?

    Apple: $69

Me: so I can just lose it and keep my old case? Because what if my case ends up not being the problem and I have to replace the headphones later?

Apple: No, you can't do that

Me: well I'm just gonna go "lose" my case now and just come back some other time

    Smh

Edit: No it's not under warranty, and they still wanted to keep it lol. Hence why I will "lose" my case. I know they may not provide service to that case in the future. However the system is flawed, and if I by a new case and it's not the problem- then I just wasted my money. So why give apple a case and my $69 when it might not be the problem.

Jonathan Morrison editing an entire video on the iPad Pro

Here is the video of his impressions on editing with LumaFusion : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZpsliNmJLo

Here is the final video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJMIzVLcShs

The scrubbing and rendering performance is insane. LumaFusion seems to be incredibly underrated.

Showerthought: all iPhones from 5S and before had a screen size closer to the Apple Watch S4 than they do to the XS Max.

Steve Jobs had the courage to lower the first iPhone’s price by $200 - about 33% - just 2 months after it was released and even offered rebates to early adopters. Would today’s Apple ever do something like this in the immediate future?

It amazes me how 3D Touch is trending on Twitter

    Posted: 19 Nov 2018 10:09 AM PST

I've known about 3D Touch since it was introduced in the 6S. I've known about the cursor feature implemented in the keyboard when using 3D Touch. Yet somehow people were completely unaware and now are starting to realize and it's becoming a trend. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!

You have not felt the speed until you swipe like crazy across apps in the new iPad Pro 11”

    Posted: 19 Nov 2018 04:37 PM PST

Wow, that thing is fast! But it's not the processor alone, it's the 120 Hz plus the CPU. The combination is magical. For example the XS is also super fast but doesn't feel that fast.

Prediction: the 12-inch MacBook is going to be the first ARM Mac

    Posted: 19 Nov 2018 07:24 AM PST

Given how there's a big overlap between the MacBook Air and the 12-inch MacBook, I think the 12-inch MacBook is destined to be Apple's first ARM MacBook.

During the transition from Intel to Apple's ARM processors, MBA and MBP would serve mainstream users while the svelte and powerful ARM MacBook would attract early adopters and allow developers to update their apps.

The 12-inch MacBook - nearly portless and incredibly skinny - seems to be Apple's ideal of an ultraportable Mac and I cannot imagine that they'd kill it by replacing in with the "old" MacBook Air, so this is the path I think it would take.

Engraving on the new pencil is great, but I really hope Apple gives us an engraving option on the gen 2 AirPods.

    Posted: 19 Nov 2018 12:50 PM PST

My household (as I assume millions of others do too) have several sets of AirPods under one roof at any one time. We have taken to wrapping them in differently coloured strips of tape.

At my mum and dads house my dad put an Apple sticker (the fruit not the company) on his.

For gen two I would love to just have my initials or phone number engraved/printed on the back (or even the front) of my AirPods case.

The other option would be a wide variety of colours... but I guess that's not how Apple's marketing department rolls.

Why iPhone Sales In India Are Dropping

    Posted: 19 Nov 2018 10:52 PM PST

Back when I used to work at Windows Phone, I used to get a lot of competitor phones, including the iPhone for testing and got a liking to it. However, there seems to be no surprise/X factor in the phone in the past 5 years. Every update seems very incremental.

Until the 7th generation, iPhones used to be ok for their price. They had a decent camera and had a long life, besides being reasonably ahead of the competition in battery life and processing power.

Now, they are super expensive and stopped innovating. The iPhone XS seems way more expensive than the Macbook Air and find that ridiculous. Both are computers and find the Macbook far more useful for my daily applications.

Take the example of the the OnePlus 6T. It provides camera capability that is quite good for daily usage and for special occasions we get someone with DSLR anyway. 99% of us are not going to shoot anywhere near the ones on Shot on iPhone commercials. We don't use as much computing on the phone and when I do, I believe the Android 9 has far more capability in terms of coding and library availability.

Thus, iPhone's price is no longer justifiable for my family or for many other Indians (Things are going from bad to worse for Apple in India).

I'm an Apple fan and have been using the Macbook for a decade. I also have a couple of iPads. I have owned the iPods since early 2000s and use plenty of Apple tools. Just that iPhone is not one among those.

However, iPhone price seems to be justifiable for many Americans [who seldom pay for the phone in one shot, but do it through a 2 year contract] and Chinese [who are rapidly growing rich and look for status markers from the west].

Even there the Apple fans are ditching the iPhone and price seems to be a critical factor. Poor iPhone Sales Expected As Suppliers Fight Apple's Serious Cuts!

I updated my super snappy Mid-2013 MB Air to Mojave, and it became SUPER SLOW. I hated it. Then I took it to the Apple Store, they told me to disable FileVault and restart, and it worked! Now is as snappy as the first day.

First apple device experience: MacBook pro 2018 13inch 4-cores

    Posted: 19 Nov 2018 09:31 AM PST

    I have always been a Windows+Android user.

I´m running a small marketing agency, and one of my colleagues only uses Apple devices. He have jokingly been pestering me about switching to Apple since he started working for me. Like Inception a joke turned into a possibility into reality during the span of a year.

I am writing this post on a 2018 MacBook pro 13" i7 with 4-cores. Here are my experience after switching out my Surface pro 4 with this very beautiful device:

    The Good

    • I am using Safari for everything except G-suite apps (Docs, slides etc.). Our company uses G-suite, so the first thing I did when I got the device was to download Chrome. Only to find out it guzzled battery juice like there was no tomorrow. Tried Safari, and man, what a sleek fast browser. Love it.
    • Keyboard: Was very anxious about this one. Since I write A LOT, and absolutely have to write fast to deliver projects in a timely manner. I am so in love with this keyboard. I got a light touch when writing, and this is just perfect. I am averaging around 80 wpm now when writing english that is not my first language.
    • Tocuh bar: Coming from the Surface line I am used to using touch input a lot. So I was sharing the opinion that the touch bar was a gimmick, and had low hopes for the strip. I was wrong. With better touch tool I made a custom touch bar strip that was tailored to my workflow and it has been magic. A lot better than generic touch input.
    • Touch pad: Jesus this thing is good. I abandoned my mouse and only use the touch pad now. I feel like I am more precise with the touch pad than my surface mouse when working in Illustrator. Also very nice to not have to move my hands all the way from the keyboard to the mouse. Just slide em down to the huge touch pad.
    • USB c: I love the concept of USB c. One of the reasons I didn´t consider the new surface laptop/pro. I also discovered that my ultra wide samsung monitor supported usb c with charging. So when I arrive at work I only plug in one USB c cable from the monitor and I am ready to go.

    The Bad

    • The device got a lot warmer than expected from pretty simple tasks, but the fans kicked in late. Which is nice when working on a desk, not so much on the lap. However after using Safari instead of Chrome, and being mindful of what apps I have running when having the device in my lap it got a lot cooler.
    • Walled garden: I found the Note app wonderful, but seems I need an iPhone to use it well. The notes was synced with Gmail, but as emails which was useless imho. Handoff etc. being exclusive to Apple devices as far as I know - a shame.

    The Surprise

    • I do some light html coding, and moderate css coding. But I have never done any programming. When I worked with the 13" screen on a desk I found the screen scaled up to max where I get maximized the real estate the best. However when I work with the device on my lap the screen is too far away, so I change the scale option down one value so the text is larger. I found myself doing this several times a day, which was frustrating. After some googling I found an Apple script that did this for me. Created an App based on the Apple script - needed to do some adjustment to get it to work. I probably spent 3 hours on the whole thing, which is embarrassing. However, I was so proud when the thing worked. So I made one app for scaling up the screen, and one app for scaling down the screen. Then I added two shortcuts on the Touch bar with BetterTouchTool. So now, when I lay down on the couch to answer some emails, I just do a quick press on the touch bar and the screen is just the way I like it after 0,5 seconds. Amazing!

Now I just need Apple to make an iPhone with USB c charging port :)

iOS location services - impact on battery drain

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 02:09 AM PST

    Hi all,

If I have several apps that require always on location services (e.g. security camera, heating, etc) am I better using something like IFTTT to trigger the geolocation (one app using location services) to reduce the battery drain? Not sure on the technical aspects of how iOS allows apps to call location services.

    Thanks!

What is your most used “gimmicky” feature?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2018 10:41 AM PST

For me it's the 3D Touch on the keyboard. It's so convenient to just press down on the keyboard and move the cursor around when correcting typos or adding words into sentences.

It's one of my most used features on my iPhone and honestly I find it hard to type on any other phone without it.

    What's yours?
