UPDATE: My wife washed her brand new MacBook

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 01:28 PM PDT

This is a long overdue update to an issue this community helped me out with.

Short version: My wife bought a new MackBook. Within the first few days of ownership, she was carrying it down the stairs with some laundry and, to make it easier to get down the stairs, but the laptop in the basket. She forgot about it and then when she loaded the washing machine, the laptop fell in too. There was no sound as it was padded by the laundry. The laundry went through an entire cycle and came out clean but non-functional. But clean.

I posted about it to this sub to see what I could do. I was thinking credit card insurance but it turns out that was useless and homeowners insurance didn't cover it (cant remember why). I was contacted by an Apple store manager who said to bring it into the store and talk to the manager about it.

I brought it into the Apple store and was honest about what happened, explained that this was a big purchase for us, that it happened within days of purchase, took full responsibility, and said we have no expectations but if there is something you can do to help, let me know. They were eager to help, but the system has been changed recently and it is hard to do so. They tried tirelessly to apply a post-facto Apple Care policy, send it in for repair with a discount, or even replace it. I was surprised they were so willing to help, but it was difficult to see how. It took a couple trips to the store and a couple calls to AppleCare to find someone who had the clearance to do anything, but then that person went above and beyond. They comped an entire "repair" that replaced everything but the bottom panel, basically a complete replacement. The best I was hoping for was the opportunity to buy Apple Care and pay for the incident fee. I certainly had no expectations, only hope.

Apple customer service has always been exceptional and one of the ways it has been great is that they allow their employees some latitude to help customers at their discretion. It appears these days are ending, which is a little sad. It is well within their rights to refuse to fix a laptop damaged by self-acknowledged negligence. I just think it is cool that sometimes they do help, even when they don't have to.

Post script: You might say "didn't you just post this update an hour ago?" and I want to be upfront and say I did. Before I wrote the story, I anticipated people might think I was expecting or demanding a replacement so I was explicit about how I took responsibility for (my wife) destroying the laptop and that I did not have any expectations about getting a replacement or discount. I just asked for help fixing our mistake. Despite all that preamble, people still called me entitled. Rather than correcting this view post-hoc, I wanted to re-write this to show that the Apple employees initially suggested I come in, encouraged me to keep trying to reach the right people, and were generally very eager and understanding about the issue.

How does the iPhone 8's home "button" feel so real?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 12:43 PM PDT

My mom got an iPhone 8+ for mother's day, and as an andriod fan I was sceptical. Seeing it now I realize it's not as bad as I've made it out to be. (Maybe a tad too pricy for me though)

Anyways, one thing that fascinates me is the home button, or rather, the lack of one. I've always been a fan of home buttons, and the fact that apple removed them gave me even more reason to not buy their phones. But I've felt how well they've done the vibration thing, and found it really cool.

I haven't been able to find much on it besides it vibrates. Is it like a normal motor, or does it use some other tech?

TIL that Apple's "Aqua" user interface for Mac OS has remained essentially unchanged for 18 years

    Posted: 11 Aug 2018 12:35 AM PDT

Apple implemented the Aqua UI in January 2000 and it's remained virtually the same ever since. I'm actually curious to know whether this is by choice or whether there are limitations within the Mac OS code that would make a radical redesign of the UI impractical.

For comparison, during the same period Microsoft's Windows has undergone six major UI overhauls.

If the MBPs were available without the touchbar and for $200 less, would you choose it or not?

I just got a MacBook Pro from 2006 for $50 and it still rocks

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 12:52 PM PDT

I bought it because I'm a senior in High school and I want a non-school computer (we have dell 2 in ones) and my current personal win 10 sucks and only had 32gb flash and is slower than hell. I am shocked with the speed of this MacBook, it's has upgraded ram and hdd too so more of a plus. Good eBay snag.

New(?) siri suggestions to call back are awesome!

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 07:17 AM PDT

I was very busy with work today and my client called me, I had to simply hang up before even answering the phone because I was with another client that was also important. I simply turn off my phone and put it down for 2-3 hours. At this point i totally forgot that my client even called me. Then what happenes? Bam " Siri suggestion " Call Bla Bla Client Back " bum client saved. Thanks apple.

Is the 2018 MacBook Pro worth it over the 2017?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 03:17 PM PDT

I am heading into college and can either get a 2017 model for $1500 or a 2018 model for $1650. I'm needing this laptop to last me all throughout college and possibly after that. Is it worth it to spring for the 2018 model? My main programs will be Adobe Photoshop, After Affects, and Sony Vegas.

Where do you see Apple going with the MacBook Air and the MacBook?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 06:50 AM PDT

Going through the sub reddit, a lot of the focus seems be on the MacBook Pro. Where do you think Apple will take the MacBook and the MacBook Air line up?

Why can't Mac users connect their iPhone to their Mac directly?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2018 01:05 AM PDT

I have an iPhone x but the new MacBooks don't have a port so I can use the iPhone cable and connect it to the Mac. Is anyone else annoyed by this?

So what really is Project Titan?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 08:30 AM PDT

    1) Developing fully self driving vehicle for consumers. Fully integrated with iOS, Siri, etc.

    2) Same as above, but strictly operates as a ride hailing network.

    3) Purely software. Developing self driving software to license to companies. I'd hope they aren't trying to do this because they would get obliterated by Waymo.

    4) Software/Hardware to license to automakers. Also hope it isn't this, because I see Waymo with a very large lead.

    5) Partnership with large automaker to push CarPlay.

I love my macbook pro keyboard (It is a slightly older MBP, so not the recent keyboards people moan about). What is the closest to that keyboard that I can get for my mac mini? The official magic keyboard?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2018 01:41 AM PDT

The MBP keyboard is great. It feels just the right size. Although, it is probably half due to the fact i am used to it, but when i use any other keyboard it just doesn't feel right.

What is the best usb (/bluetooth/etc) keyboard that feels like a mbp keyboard?

What do people think of the official magic keyboard? Is it similar to the macbook keyboards? I've never actually used one in real life...

Going into the genius bar to replace iPhone 6 battery tomorrow but have a few questions.

    Posted: 11 Aug 2018 01:15 AM PDT

I talked to apple support yesterday about an issue with WiFi connectivity, but eventually i bought up that my battery performance is horrible (to be expected), the screen is slightly raised and i can lift it up a bit, the screen has a white spot on the screen along with slight yellow bands down the sides of the screen, and they said that if all of that is indeed as a result of a swollen battery, they will either replace the screen and battery for cost of battery replacement, or even replace the whole unit for the same price. Is this actually true, or will i have to pay full price to get the screen replaced along with the battery?

How large does iTunes let the Apple Music cache folder get? How does the program decide when to purge content?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2018 08:49 PM PDT

I listen to music a lot on my MacBook while working. I'm wondering if there's an upper limit for the size of the cache folder (SubscriptionPlayCache). It's currently sitting at 5.5GB. I don't download content for offline playback via the Apple Music interface. After doing some research there does not seem to be a conclusive answer regarding how Apple Music decides to purge the folder, whether it's based on available disk space, a time since interacting with a track or a combination of either. I am not low on disk space and am aware that it is possible to delete the subfolder in SubscriptionPlayCache to reset it for a rebuild, just curious about the mechanics behind it.

I doubt I'll get a straight answer because my hunch is nobody knows for sure but maybe some people here may surprise me.

    Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about: https://i.imgtc.com/GfAiewk.png
