    Upgrading my iPhone 5S

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 04:20 AM PDT

I've had my iPhone 5S for a little over 4 years now. That was after upgrading from having a Motorola flip phone (yes, massive improvement!)

It's now failing me. Battery hardly lasts and I have to carry around a portable charger wherever I go. It's generally quite slow switching between apps. The fingerprint scanner has completely gone so I can't use it to unlock my phone.

I'm torn between getting either an iPhone 6S or 7. Price isn't an issue. I was drawn towards the 7 because it's the newest of the two and has a pretty good camera I've heard. Would love to improve my photographs. Also would have a better battery life (which is vital for me.) Not too fussed on new apps/features. However, I feel I would probably be contempt with the iPhone 6S. The issue is the headphone jack, since I also have my iPod Classic (still working beautifully to this day for a hand me down.)

Would just like the new iPhone to last another good 4 years, or more possibly!

Anyone else holding onto their 6s because of the headphone jack?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 04:45 PM PDT

I really want a new iPhone. I've had my 6s plus happily for 2 years. I've had an android phone between the 4s and 6s and I was happy to come back to ios.

I really do not want to return to android as with my experience iPhones do have superior build quality and ios is much more refined then android. For me it is all about the headphone jack. I use bluetooth but really like my audio and although bluetooth in itself is very good now days, the headphone availability really does not compare.

Good audio right now and the foreseeable future unfortunately comes attached to a cable and those who don't realize this simply don't own a pair of very high quality headphones.

This post is more of a commentary then a question but if any other audiophiles have come up with a solution they are running with their iPhone 8 I'd love to hear it.

Music app resetting during the day since iOS update

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 09:07 AM PDT

    Probably a badly worded title.

Basically, before the latest update I would have my phone plugged into my car playing music on my way to work, put in a day's grind and go home, plugging my phone back in and picking up where I left off. Mid song, mid-album.

Now, post-update, it only takes a few hours before the "Music" tab in control centre goes blank, and when I plug my phone back into my car it acts as if my phone was restarted and starts playing songs back at A again. I'm assuming the memory management update has something to do with this?

Just moved from the iPhone 6 Plus to the 8. Some questions.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2018 11:57 PM PDT

Any search I do on google results in spec comparisons like 6 vs 8. While searching "new features" for the 8 results in a lot of articles about more specs and Wirelss charging.

I was hoping someone can help list or link a website that would talk abot subtle new features I should be aware of. I assume I probably missed a lot skipping the 6s and 7. I would like to make the most out of new phone.

Loving the 8 btw, super fast. Almost like a breath of fresh air.

I've noticed something strange about android users

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 08:09 AM PDT

When telling android users about why I use an iPhone I bring up the security argument. And they treat it like it's a flaw they're like who needs security and software updates I honestly don't understand that

Should you avoid Google services to keep your iPhone "private"? Can you limit what Google is collecting from you?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 04:58 AM PDT

Privacy seems to be in the news a lot now. I keep reading about how Apple respects privacy and how Google is a privacy nightmare.

So, just curious, does using Google services on an iPhone destroy the privacy benefit of using Apple? Or does the built in privacy mute the data collection enough to make Google services a bit more tolerable on iPhone for the privacy conscious?

Basically, what is the harm in using Google services on in iPhone if you have an adblocker running and can limit what Google is collecting from you?

    Cancelling all alarms using Siri.

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 02:54 AM PDT

So, I tend to not only be a heavy sleeper, but am also pretty crafty at disabling all of my alarms while still being in a state that I can only explain as near comatose. Often times I've wondered how in the heck I managed to sleep through all 7 of my alarms and even how my scheduled weekday alarms turn themselves off.

I realized this morning that you can ask Siri to turn off all of your alarms and boom. They're turned off. Now, this is great if you're awake and don't feel like ticking off every alarm, but this has actually gotten me into some trouble in the past.

I see this ability as very helpful for the most part, but I wish there was a way to "lock" choice alarms. Where you not only have to unlock your phone to access the clock app, but also have to input a specific code or something. Idk. I'm a still little tired so apologies for the rambling.

Tl;Dr, I'm not that great at waking up but I'm a little too good at disabling my alarms in my sleep. Wish there was a way to make it more difficult.

    AppleCare claim history?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 09:05 AM PDT

I had an iPhone 7+ replaced about a week after I bought it because the screen spontaneously cracked. About 2 months after that I dropped the phone and the glass cracked, they replaced the whole phone again because they didn't have them in stock yet.

Now I just cracked the glass again, and I want to have it fixed. Is there any way to check my claim history to see how many they have on it? I don't remember if I paid the $29 fee on that first one and I think they covered it 100% on warranty and didn't use the AppleCare claim, but I don't want to make an appointment for 2 weeks out and go to an Apple store just to have them tell me it is the full $200. I can't find it on my AppleCare status and I hate trying to bypass the phone/support system to talk to an actual person.

Anyone have some iPhone Plus wallpapers that are light enough to make the lock screen clock black?

As title really, just after some wallpapers that are light enough to trigger the black lock screen font colors.

Wondered if anyone has come up with some creative ways to make it invert while still having a seemingly dark picture?

Help! My taptic engine randomly became weak :(

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 05:22 AM PDT

It happened randomly, i first noticed it when i went to set an alarm I didn't get the familiar and very satisfying feedback from setting the time. I thought maybe it was my case but tried it and nopee it was a little better but still very much weaker than normal. I've tinkered with all the setting and even reset them all and nothing seems to get it back to normal. Have any of you guys experienced something like this?(also haven't even had my phone for 60 days so the taptic engine couldn't have worn down already)

Let's Talk Notes: What app do you use and why?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 06:49 AM PDT

My primary, daily device is my iphone, but throughout the day I also use a PC (for work) and an iPad with a keyboard (to supplement my work computer).

For my job, I take a lot of notes. Interviews, meetings, brainstorming sessions, etc. Lots and lots of notes. I also take notes for personal stuff, primarily on my iPhone (e.g., trip planning, notes on the kids, customer service phone calls, etc).

For many years, I used Evernote and was generally happy with it, but the product became bloated and overpriced. In addition, the lack of dark mode or other viewing options made it impossible to take notes in dark conference rooms without feeling like my eyeballs were on fire. And there were lots of syncing issues.

I switched to Bear last year and overall love the platform. The tagging system, themes, and other features make it perfect. However, the lack of cross-platform support or a web-based option is becoming a huge limitation. I don't want to leave Bear, but I really need the ability to take notes on my PC and have them sync to my other devices.

I am considering Standard Note, but the lack of attachment capabilities is a big limitation for me.

So I am curious - what do people use to take notes? I'm particularly interested in hearing from iPhone users who take a lot of notes for work, school, etc.

Will staying out of the "ecosystem" ruin my iphone experience?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 09:52 AM PDT

I have been an android (specifically a samsung galaxy user) for the last 5 years and for all its faults, I have always bent the android os to whatever I want it to do but I'm planning on moving away from samsung on my next purchase and since the pixel is not available on my country, I'm looking at iphones. My main issue is that I do a lot of wired/wireless file transfers from phone to pc, be it photos, the latest episodes of my favorite shows and files from work. When you plug an android phone to a pc, the file system is immediately present. E.G you go to the viber folder to look for files and pics received from that app and you go to dcim to look at pictures taken from that camera app. and etc. A while ago, my brother asked me to backup his iphone pics to a hard drive and I felt like a dumbass kid. There is no file system and some files are not accessible! You could only access your camera pics but pics from other apps are absent. You could argue just put everything on the cloud! but I like to have a copy of my files that is not on the phone or on the net so this is a major issue. I think it would be easier if i had an "ecosystem" companion like a macbook but hell would freeze over before I buy an expensive laptop that is essentially crippled for my needs (gaming). Recent switchers from android, how did you deal with this? I thought ios was easier to use?

Best way to buy new iPhone?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2018 09:31 AM PDT

Not one of them works, either. Some will pull up error codes, others are apparently completely gone.

Is there any way of reviving even one? Or are they just very well designed (and cheap!) paperweights?
