3D touching an app icon should give you the option to open Notification settings for that app

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:33 AM PST

Presently the only default 3D Touch menu item is "Share". It'd be useful to jump to notification settings, and/or general settings for that app.

Hey Guys, I just moved on from Android to an iPhone for the first time ever (iPhone 7 to be specific). Just wanted to share my experience after a usage of nearly 2 weeks. Also anything you guys would suggest to a first time iPhone user?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:17 AM PST

So, I've always been the "Android fanboy" with all my previous devices being Android only. But unfortunately, my last device, Nexus 6P fell at the hands of the famous bootloop of death. Being an untimely demise of my phone I was on the brink of choosing the next device. And I wasn't certain if any device would fill the void my 6P would be leaving. Also current Google flagships (Pixel lineup) was also starting to get wierd issues that I began to learn on their subreddit. So I decided I'd try Apple this time. Moreover because I realised that apart from few bugs in the OS the iPhones never have any major issues on the fault of the company (like processor chip bootloops, hardware failures etc). I was aware of its "just works" approach and just wanted to give it a try so I got the iPhone 7.

The ecosystem switch is pretty big if you ask me. I had spent so much for apps on Google Play store, so leaving it all behind was pretty tough decision to make. Also being vested completely in the Google services make it a bit challenging. Nevertheless, I decided to leave that all behind and I think it wasn't much of an issue after 4-5 days:-

The iPhone 7 was the only best option that fitted well in my budget so I got that one. Also Apple's support for OS is much longer that Google's, so it would definately last much longer as per my guess. Anyways here are my thought so far after 2 weeks of usage:-

    • The build- Well it's Apple so its never letting you down in terms of design. The design is something I always looked forward to in all year's iPhone releases. iPhone 7 is no different. Alot of you might say the design is boring but coming for the first time to an Apple device, i think the phone is pretty well built.

    • Camera is pretty darn good. the low light imagery of this phone is better than I tought. Also OIS feels so much better than EIS I had on my previous phone.

    • The speakers- My nexus 6P had front facing stereo speaker so I was ready to be let down BUT i am surprised at how good the phone speakers are in iPhone7. Might sound wierd but I can actually hear the bass if I put my ear closer to the speakers.

    • Apps- This is so far the biggest change I've noticed. Apps on the iPhone are so so much polished in general compared to android. Had heard about it before but never experienced it, and damn, its so much noticiable. This is partly the reason why I decided not to go for samsung flagships, because eventually you realise you get poorly optimised apps even after paying $800+.

    Other-

1-3D touch is pretty impressive. I always felt it was just a gimmicky feature but I find it pretty useful.

2-The Taptic feedback engine is such a thought out feature, the vibration feedback becomes so much better with it.

3- iMessage and Facetime are very well polished apps imo. Stickers and effects on imessage are pretty cool to me.

Things I'm missing/adapting- The back button. Yes, home button is easier version but coming from Android I always feel I just leave my apps open when I press home button to close apps. The ocd in me just makes me feel that apps will be eating up memory and resources if I don't clear them by swiping up. Is it really the correct way of closing the apps? Also the battery just gets me through the day. And the phone is new, so I defintely will need a battery case in the future when the battery degrades. I know the Plus models have a bigger battery but I like the 4.7 inch screen size more. It feels a sweet spot for one handed use.

Any things you guys would recommend to a new iPhone user?

Is it still worth it to upgrade to the iPhone X

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:41 AM PST

Im due for an upgrade through my phone carrier. I currently have a 128 gb 6s Plus with little to no issues. Im looking at the X 256gb model for $699. I use my phone for work a ton (mostly photos and videos). The 6s plus is my first Apple phone and I've been thoroughly impressed. Is it worth it to switch now, or should I wait for the next round of phones to come later this year. For an investment of 700 id like the phone to last for 3-4 years.

    iPhone 6s or 7?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 05:34 PM PST

I broke my iPhone 5. For my replacement, I already bought a iPhone 6s 32gb AT&T from BestBuy for $470 (w/ tax) but then later found out I could get a very good condition (no scratches, no replaced parts) iPhone 7 128gb red color Verizon unlocked for $400 cash from a local iFixit store. Is it worth to return the new 6s (and pay $35 restock fee) and buy the cheaper 7?

Yes, I know I can find cheaper versions of these phones online but I want to avoid dealing with the shipping times and potentially finding out seller didn't describe condition accurately.

Does anybody know a calendar app that works with the travel time feature and will allow me to duplicate events?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 02:08 AM PST

I work 40 hours a week but I don't always work the same days. So I'm looking for a calendar app that works with the travel time feature and more importantly will allow me to duplicate/copy & paste events. Thanks in advance.

Since iOS 11.2, a larger duplicate file is saved every time you edit an image. Potentially devastating for smallcapacity iPhones.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 08:55 PM PST

I posted to /r/iOS yesterday but it's a ghost town over there. Anyways,

Before updating, an edited image will show up in Image Capture as just the original image, although with an extra AAE file with the edits. Now the phone is creating an entirely separate image, usually larger in size, alongside the original.

So for example the original image is IMG_3389 and right beside it is the edited image named IMG_E3389. This is for pretty much every edited image since late January. The original would be, for example, 2MBs but the edited images almost universally add about half a MB on top of that.

So if you took about 30 pictures (not even factoring in Live Photos and the extra size there), adding up to 60 MBs, and then edited them in the Camera Roll, you'll still only see 30 pictures but the total size comes out to roughly 150 MBs or so. Whatever Apple is doing since the update is more than doubling the storage required for pictures if you like to tweak the colors and lighting afterwards. Although not too big a deal for me because I decided to get the highest capacity, I can imagine this having significant effects on people with lower capacity phones.

Can anyone else check out their Image Capture with edited photos and see if this is the case with you as well?

TLDR iOS now saves a second image every time you edit a photo in the Camera Roll. You won't notice in the camera but you'll see two girls per edited image on Image Capture or when browsing from a computer.

    iPhone 6 display lifting

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:16 AM PST

Recently noticed that my iPhone 6's screen is lifting up where the volume buttons are. This causes an annoying click when I press it down. Here you can see a tiny gap between the frame and glass Would Apple fix it / how much would it cost? Is it a simple fix? (Phone is almost 2 years old, no apple care)
