Is Facebook degrading their mobile website experience on purpose to ‘force’ us to use the iOS app?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 04:22 PM PST

I've notice over the past several weeks that I'm running into more and more errors when checking Facebook on iOS safari. I purposely don't have the app because it's bloated, full of spyware and frankly I just don't trust the app altogether. The mobile site has been giving me 'no internet connection ' errors and the search function has been hit or miss. Is Facebook purposely neglecting/degrading the site so that people like me cave and go back to the app? I refuse to do so. I check Facebook about twice a day and the mobile experience used to be great to see your feed and casually interact with friends. I can't even read my messages on the mobile site anymore.

What causes a single character of text to crash Apple's devices, and why has this happened now several times in the last few years?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:07 AM PST

It's incredibly frustrating that this issue has cropped up multiple times on Apple's devices.

How does this occur and why does it keep reoccurring? What is Apple doing to prevent this from happening again, other than just taking their sweet time to release an update for it?

This happens now at least once a year, and it's super annoying.

Are you excited about AirPower? Here's why I am excited.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:47 PM PST

I am very excited about the AirPower because of one aspect that I think has been over looked: the ability to charge multiple devices without having to align them on the pad.

Other multi device Qi chargers require you to place the devices on a specific space because every device needs to be aligned to its own charging coil but Apple seems to have invented a technology that allows any of three devices to be place however the user wants to place them.

That opens the door to a counter top which is Qi enabled on its entire surface so people can put their devices on it without having to worry that they haven't aligned them properly. Maybe one day we can have a Qi enabled Macbook or even iMac! (Qi supports up to 120 Watts)

My experience from switching to and iPhone X after having an android phone since the S4.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:30 PM PST

I have been an avid Android lover for years now. I have used all sorts of phones from the Samsung Galaxy and Note line, the Google Pixel phones, and other big names. The only iPhone I ever had was an iPhone 4, and even then, I only had it for a month or so while I waited for the next Galaxy to come out.. and I must say.

I have been missing out! The iPhone X is truly one amazing piece of hardware. I still dont understand how it is just so smooth. All of the animations are like butter, everything just seems so quick and snappy! I do miss how nicely Android handled notifications. Sometimes if I have a lot of notifications at once, it is a little confusing trying to find them. I love Face ID. My Galaxy S8+ had similar features, but it did not work nearly this well. The feel of the phone is very nice as well. It feels like a very high end device, without feeling as though it is going to shatter if I set it on a hard surface.

Overall I am very happy with my recent switch, and just wanted to share my experience with this sub! I spent a lot of time lurking and seeing all the good posts about this phone, and now I am blessed to have one of my own! Thank you to everyone who has said good things about this phone for helping me switch.

Apple AirPods, when they work, have been a great experience. However, I've been having a lot more issues lately than I would like.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:38 PM PST

Poor battery life, random disconnections whilst listening to music, hearing the connection noise three or four times in a row, and having the phone talk through itself rather than through the AirPods while I'm in a call. I've already had these replaced once, and these have gone bad around the same time as the first pair.

Whilst it could be a dud, I've been reading a good amount of post forums of people having similar experiences. Whilst the "Only those who are having issues" or "It's a dud! Just get a replacement" arguments are valid, I'm suspecting that it's either separately or the combination of hardware and iOS that have been giving me these headaches.

So yes, when they work, the AirPods are amazing. However, I'm beginning to regret having to go through all this fuss.

Can someone explain what the AppleTV is good for that a chromecast can’t do

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:55 PM PST

I have a chromecast but we're getting an Apple TV for free for signing up for tv service. I'm a little confused what the ATV does that the chromecast doesn't and why it's a $200 premium cost when most streaming devices are ~$40. I know I know, Apple premium cost but is it good for anything else aside from streaming paid services?

I feel like there's so many ways of getting your shows on the television like casting it from your phone, laptop, etc.

I wish I could use the HomePod as a dedicated home theater speaker.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 06:09 PM PST

Im no audiophile, I dont need an elaborate setup to be content.

By all accounts the HomePod sounds phenomenal. The sound quality, plus attractive design make me wish there was a way to output my TVs sound thru it.

I want to be able to rout the sound thru it no matter what Im watching on TV. AppleTV support is great, but I would like to be able to use it as the speaker when Im playing video games or watching a blueray as well.

    Maybe next generation.

    My mac thinks it's a Samsung Galaxy S8. I don't own a S8.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:27 PM PST

When I open Terminal, it thinks it's a Samsung-sm-g95u as root. I'm really not sure what is causing this. Has anyone else had this problem? I've never owned a Samsung phone before, only iPhones.

    Proof

    Edit: Fixed, thanks guys

I figured out how to sort songs within an Apple Music Playlist - by Artist, Song Name, etc.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 08:16 PM PST

I honestly have no idea if this is common knowledge here, so if it is feel free to report/downvote this post.

For the longest time I had issues trying to organize my songs within my Apple Music playlists by Artist, Song Name, etc. I searched for the solution on the Apple Forums and on reddit, but I couldn't find any answers.

Anyways, I figured out how to do it. It's still impossible on iOS, which is honestly unbelievable. However, you can make a playlist on Apple Music in iOS, and then sort it on your desktop through Itunes. On your computer though, so long as Itunes on that computer is Synced to the iCloud Music Library, all you have to do within Itunes is to select the playlist, and then go:

    View >> Sort By

And then you can select which criteria you want the music in your playlist to be sorted by. Once you do this, it should automatically wirelessly sync with Apple Music on your phone.

Again, sorry if this is obvious, but it was bugging me for a very long time so I'd thought I'd share what I found out!

Just got my HomePod but how to I make Siri be quieter.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 08:20 PM PST

She's really loud and when using at night time it's kinda frustrating. Can I turn her down?

Also when I ask her what the weather is, she says she doesn't know where I am, why?

If I take my MacBook Pro to the Apple store, will they help me factory reset it? Weird situation.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 10:04 AM PST

Ok, I'll try to keep this short. I've had issues with my new 2016 MacBook Pro 13" since February 1st. I have a list of everything that has gone wrong and it's a very long list. I've called Apple Support and had my issues escalated to the supervisors numerous times because Apple Support can't figure out WHY my computer is messing up. All my settings are correct, but for some reason, things just aren't working.

I'm having A LOT of software issues. There are no hardware issues with my computer. My question is: If I bring my MacBook Pro to an apple store after I make an appointment, will they factory reset my laptop and erase everything? I'm honestly desperate and trying to start from scratch. No one can seem to figure out why I'm having software issues and it seems like everything has been done but issues are not resolving. This is my first MacBook Pro and I'm not well-versed in technology and am at a loss.

It’d be nice if tvOS let us hide or uninstall system apps we don’t want or use.

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 01:43 AM PST

I've never touched or used the podcast or computers apps. And I don't want people jumping into the photos app either and I personally have no use for it on the television.

Those apps being there is useless clutter that I don't use. Also, them being in my living room without authentication leaves them open to other people touching them (though not a problem currently, I still don't like it).

It's really a critical issue, but I like to curate my home screen on my devices to only show what I actually use. Having these useless icons annoys me

Has anyone else noticed the severe lack of features in Pages compared to Word for academic writing?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 08:49 AM PST

Seriously, I only recently noticed this but beyond basic work and iCloud integration it has nearly nothing natively in it. Theres no referencing system, you can't give images linked captions and then generate a table of figures, theres no cross-referencing system, theres no system for dividing the document into columns etc, etc. Like these things seem random but they are so basic and it actually frustrating when you would like to be able to always use pages, but when writing academic writing you need to produce many of these things and so are forced to use Word

Criticizing a product for what it doesn’t do is the easiest way to make a review

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:27 AM PST

Of course I'm talking about Siri on the HomePod. It's really easy to list all the random useless things that Alexa and Google do but Siri can't and claim that HomePod is lacking. However I think people are really overlooking the hard work that went into the 90% usage case which is playing music.

You can literally speak at a normal voice while music is blasting at full volume across the room, and Siri picks up the request no problem.

When she speaks, it actually sounds like a human voice and not a robot, ala Google and Alexa.

The sound quality of HomePod, the actual "interface" to end users, is neutral and in 360*. This is incredibly hard to do. Like really really really hard to do. Google Home Max is at least twice the size, distorts at max volume, and had a U shaped EQ so it appears to sound better to untrained ears, but is actually rather unfaithful to the original source. And not to mention it's directional.

In my opinion, Apple really nailed the fundamentals of a speaker with smarts. It's incredibly good at playing music, first and foremost. Siri is really fast, accurate, and human sounding at the things she can do. The 90% usage case is handled far better than any other smart speaker. It's an incredible user experience to be able to play music on a whim. I have audiophile grade speakers and HD800s but use HomePod far more simply due to the convenience.

Yes there are things that are missing in the SW but Apple has created the best smart speaker HW on the consumer market, and are in a great position to iterate on the SW. It's easy to criticize Siri and HomePod for missing gimmick features, but I think that most consumers would want a good music device, and Apple has nailed it. For all the techies that want to demo features to friends, get an Alexa or Google Home. But for those that just want to kick back and listen to a good sounding, convenient speaker, the HomePod is amazing.

    Just my two cents.

TLDR: Focusing on missing niche features makes it easy to overlook bigger picture things and ignore subtle details that are done right in HomePod. Apple succeeded in making an amazing music player, which is 90% of the smart speaker usage.

[Question] I love to draw pictures in iMessage - is there any similar software on OS X?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:18 AM PST

I have a Wacom tablet but the feel of the software I'm using (Sketchbook Pro) isn't right. Any digital artists know of something similar to the iMessage drawing feature? I'm talking about the one where you turn the phone landscape while in message.

    Apple Music on Android

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:26 AM PST

The last time i tried Apple Music on Galaxy s6, it lagged like hell and barely usable. Does anyone know if it got improved with newer android phone? Currently using iPhone 7 and thinking of switching to android but Apple Music is my main concern.
