My favorite Apple Watch apps list! Check it out!

    Posted: 16 Jan 2018 06:00 PM PST

Stocard - Digitize your reward cards! You can add just about every reward card you can think of. I've got Staples, Autozone, BestBuy, Publix and a lot more on my Apple Watch. I no longer have to carry all these cards in my wallet. Whenever you're shopping, just pop-up your loyalty cards barcode on your Apple Watch and have it scanned by the cashier to receive your points, rewards and discounts.

Autosleep - Automatically track your sleep from your Apple Watch. No buttons to press! If you wear your Apple Watch to bed, AutoSleep will also analyse your sleep quality. By using time asleep, restlessness, time awake and heart rate it can score the quality of your sleep and provide you with a comprehensive nightly analysis.

HeartWatch - This app has actually saved lives! It lets you get a complete picture, monitor & analyse your heart rate readings captured on your Apple Watch. HeartWatch lets you see how your heart is beating across four simple views. Waking, Regular, Workout & Sleeping. Each of these views are isolated because, while you may want a higher heart rate during a workout, if your heart is racing when you aren't doing any exercise then this is likely not a good thing and probably something you might want to show your doctor.

Carrot Weather - CARROT Weather is a crazy-powerful weather app that delivers hilariously twisted forecasts. If you're like me, you can set it to strictly professional to get the info without the humor added in. You can purchase the premium upgrade to receive precipitation and severe weather alerts, as well as reports on the weather for the upcoming day.

RadarScope - This has always been my goto app for a weather radar. RadarScope is a specialized display utility for weather enthusiasts and meteorologists that allows you view NEXRAD Level 3 and Super-Resolution radar data along with Tornado, Severe Thunderstorm, Flash Flood and Special Marine Warnings, and predicted storm tracks issued by the US National Weather Service. This radar is much more better than the Carrot Weather radar. I use only the FREE version which is simply fantastic! You only pay if you want additional features.

Deluxe Moon Pro - I've always wanted to know what day will be a full moon, quarter moon or new moon. This app does it all and more! I use only the FREE version but you can make an in app purchase for additional features.

TV Show Tracker 3 - Track your favorite TV Shows! I love this app! Know what day your show is on, what time it's on, what channel it's on and even get an alert on your Apple Watch 15 minutes or more before your show starts so you don't miss it or record it. You also get info on what the next episode is about. I can't say enough about this app. It's awesome and my friends love it on the Apple Watch!

Simple Roster - I surprised my co-workers with this today at work. It's an app where you can add your weekly work schedule. In my case, I added mine and every employee I work with so when I look at my Apple Watch it shows me every one working that day, their scheduled shift and job position. Cool app! It took me a little time to learn and master it but when you do, it's just awesome and useful.

Breaking News - Another BIG favorite of mine. Breaking News stories appear in real-time as it happens. This app is a must have! You get the latest breaking news instantly super fast in real time before any other app, tv news, radio or any one knows about it. That fast!

LastPass - Password manager. Have your login and password info with you at all times.

Authy - Two-factor authentication on your Apple Watch.

Shazam - Ever hear a song somewhere and said, 'Who is that group? What's the name of that song?'. Well this app answers those magaical questions!

Bear - Have a thought or need a reminder? Use this app to talk to and record whatever you need.

Wunderlist - A to-do list and task manager to get stuff done. Make a grocery list, stuff that needs to be done list? This is the app to create easy lists that you can check-off each task as you complete them.

How many apps do you have on your iPhone that you would not normally have if it's not for apple watch?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 06:33 AM PST

This is one thing about apple watch: to really get most of it you need apps. And boy I'm noticing that I have tons of apps that I would not normally have on my phone if it's not for apple watch.

I matter of fact this morning I counted a whopping 22 apps that are there simply because of apple watch. And this is AFTER I removed those that I don't use all that frequently.

It should be noted that there are even some apps that came pre-installed on the iPhone that I keep simply because of apple watch. And there are tons of others that fall into that category as well. For example: if it's not for apple watch I would not bother with anything health related on my phone. Apple maps? Only there because of apple watch. I use google maps normally. Apple weather? Same thing. I use The Weather Netwrok normally on my phone but apple watch portion of this app sucks on apple watch. So I have Apple Weather and Carror Weather (that I use only on the AW as it's fantastic on it)

    List goes on and on...

So this makes me curious: How bad is it in your case?

I've seen the crown being worn on both sides and figured I'd try it out for a few days to see which way is 'better'

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 05:15 AM PST

So after seeing multiple comments of "why are you wearing your watch upside down" and reading the normal responses "it's so I don't emergency call while doing push-ups" or " it means i can scroll with my thumb which I find easier" I figured, maybe I'm wearing mine the 'wrong' way.

FYI I wear my watch on my left wrist with the crown on the right.

So a few days ago I switched it up so the crown was on the left. Initially I didn't see any issues with it, after all the watch is squarish so looks the same either way.

I've never experienced the emergency call issue at the gym, but I can understand why people would. Maybe I just wear my watch higher up (just past the bone like all the exercise apps recommend) or maybe I've just been lucky so this was no different to be, still no emergency calls while doing push-ups.

When using the crown over these days I found that I was actually covering parts of the screen and the bottom with my thumb and my forefinger was covering the top right corner, sometimes taking me in to reminders which was rather annoying. When I scroll with my forefinger I tend to hold the band if i need some resistance.

Then came the Apple Pay scenario, I don't feel that i have the dexterity in my thumb to produce the double click as well as my forefinger so I found i'd bring up the dock more than Apple Pay, I find this with my iPhone X when I need to double click to pay, i just lock the screen 80% of the time. The button was also on the inside of my jacket so difficult to access quickly, living in Scotland we wear jackets a lot!!

This morning I returned to work where I wear a shirt. I received a notification and when I went to use the crown I realised I'd have to move my shirt before I could use the crown. That was the final straw and I reverted back to the crown being on the right.

I'm happy that I finally tried it and I'm sure for some people the crown on the left will always be their way but for me it's always on the right.

Has anyone else tried to switch the crown and if so what were your experience?

TL;DR I tried the watch with the crown on the left, had various complications using it and finally decided that I was previously wearing it the correct way for me.

    Important message for WorkOutDoors users

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 04:10 AM PST

IMPORTANT: Would anyone who has bought WorkOutDoors please update to the latest version (v2.2) by the end of January.

Previous versions of the app used OpenStreetMap data from a company called Mapzen, who have unfortunately shut down. They announced this two weeks ago but kindly kept their servers running until the end of the month to allow developers time to switch to other services. This is what I have done with v2.2, which now gets the vector data from Mapbox.

Apple do not allow developers to send messages to users, so I am trying to tell as many people as possible. The app got a lot of votes and positive feedback on here a few weeks ago (thanks for that!) so I thought it was a good idea to post a message here.

The new maps look almost identical to the old ones because the data comes from the same source (OpenStreetMap), and because the maps are rendered by the app itself, so the styles and colours are the same as before. I have made a few minor improvements (e.g. 3D shading around buildings), but most people probably won't notice any difference from the maps in previous versions.

Many thanks to the beta testers who have made it possible to release a new version so quickly. Especially as they had to sacrifice all the new beta functionality that they had got used to. I promise to release another beta soon.

And thanks to everyone at Mapzen for all their hard work. Good luck in the future!

[UPDATE] Apple Watch triathlon app - sneak peak

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 02:50 AM PST

    Hey everyone!

Due to multiple reasons the app is not finished yet, not even close really, but I'm still working on it and will continue to do so. It did however get approved on TestFlight meaning I can invite you guys and you'll see the updates as I push them through.

    So, what does work?

    iPhone

    • Login and registration with e-mail or Facebook, not yet with Strava
    • Changing the current activity: sport, goal, data shown, settings
    • Creating, editing and deleting a custom activity

    Apple Watch

    • Starting an activity: setting a goal is possible but does not yet do anything
    • Starting a custom activity: You can start a custom activity like a triathlon for example and cycle through it by pressing "Next" on the menu. It will measure some data but not yet everything and it sometimes fails to hook onto the sensors. Tracking heartrate/steps works only some of the times, haven't tested swimming yet
    • Activities do get saved to HealthKit

    Note

    • At the moment you have to push the activities to the Apple Watch once, there's a "Synchronise with Apple Watch" button in the settings, this will only work once the app on the watch is actually installed
    • Changing settings or data shown for an activity does not yet do anything
    • Changing defaults doesn't work yet so don't bother
    • I forgot to it to iOS 10 so this build is only available for iOS 11
    • There might be other unfinished stuff or bugs, I am completely aware of all of them but just left them behind because I was working on other things
    • Design is optimised for iPhone 7 screen-wise, others might be a little off. This will get fixed in the future, as will everything else

There's still a lot to do, remember this is just a sneak peak and in no way a working product, this is just intended to show you what I got and to have you on the testers list for future updates.

If you want to be added as a tester send me your e-mail in a private message and download the TestFlight app. Once I add you to the list you will get an e-mail with a code you have to redeem in the TestFlight app and then you will be able to install the app.

I don't need feedback on what works and what doesn't because I already know this, however if you feel something is a little off design or UX wise please do tell. UI/UX isn't my strongest part but I tried my best to keep it user friendly and still a little appealing to look at.

    Thanks!

Seeing fine scratches on Apple Watch

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 08:05 AM PST

Doesn't bother me much, you can only see it at an angle when the screen is black but is this normal? I have a sedentary life so can't imagine what caused it unless the screen is prone to fine scratches. My return period is still open

    Configuring double-tap and Apple Wallet?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 03:19 AM PST

When I double-tap the button on my Apple Watch it brings up a version of Apple Wallet with only my credit cards. It does not have my Starbucks card, my reward cards, etc. Is there a way to configure double-tap to bring up the full version of Apple Wallet that includes my credit cards and my other cards?

In iOS on my iPhone when I double tap it defaults to showing you credit cards, but your other cards are stacked on the bottom and you can easily access them.

How are the sports loop bands from eBay

    Posted: 17 Jan 2018 12:35 AM PST

I see that there's a few sports loop bands on ebay now. How are they? For example this. I had a regular nylon band from ebay and felt it was almost better quality than the original i have.
