How to make folder aliases retain custom icons? Posted: 13 Mar 2022 01:05 AM PST I like to create custom icons for my folders to make visual navigation easier. However when I create an alias of a folder with a custom icon, it assigns the generic "blue folder" icon to the alias. If I then manually assign the same icon to the alias, it will reset to the "blue folder" icon shortly afterwards (nomally after the next restart). Is it possible to force aliases to retain the same icon as their parent folder? [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 Mar 2022 07:08 PM PST Why can't apple TV play a show in the same application windows and not make new windows just for the video? Every other streaming service does it this way. So why must Apple TV be different? It's so annoying to have more windows. [link] [comments]

MacOS Monterey - Can I stop other people's Air Play devices from showing up on my mac? Posted: 12 Mar 2022 01:40 PM PST I don't own any Air Play devices. I guess my neighbors do, I live in an apartment with 3 other units in very close proximity. Sometimes, "Living Room" or "Master Bedroom" shows up on my devices and when I record in Premiere Pro or quick time, it shows up as an input option there too. [link] [comments]
SOLVED by Monterey: 2019 MacBook Pro 16" is HOT & NOISY with an external monitor! :( Posted: 12 Mar 2022 02:54 PM PST TLDR: Use macOS Monterey's new Low Power Mode if you have issues with heat/fan noise/battery life with your MacBook Pro while plugged into an external monitor. And if you still have issues, try disabling LPM and restarting. For context, there's a 230+ page thread on MacRumors of people complaining and troubleshooting the issue of excessive heat/fan noise when using their 2019 16" MBP's while plugged into an external monitor. The general consensus was that you had to use the laptop with the lid closed (clamshell mode) to avoid the issue. This obviously didn't fit with a lot of people's workflows, but was preferable to the MBP's fans running at full blast constantly while plugged into a monitor. In addition, I myself wrote an article detailing a fix regarding specifically 1440p60 monitors, since it still had the overheating issue even with the lid closed. It got 60K+ views, and many comments of people saying that the fix worked for them. The fix was a little hacky, but made do until Apple finally released an official fix in macOS Monterey. Prior to the fix in macOS Big Sur, when idle and plugged into an external monitor, the GPU alone would consume ~18W constantly. This is insane power draw for a laptop at idle. In context, the rest of the system is only drawing ~12W at idle. And the GPU draws basically no power when using the laptop alone with no monitor attached at idle. I measured the GPU usage using exelban/stats. You don't need to install it yourself, I just used it to identify the root cause of the problem, excessive GPU power draw. After upgrading to Monterey, now idle power consumption is ~14W. Better, but still kind of high. But Monterey added a new feature called Low Power Mode. It's described as "reduce energy usage and operate more quietly." And after enabling Low Power Mode, it now reports ~6W in extended display mode. And since I have it setup to mirror displays instead, it even reports as low as ~5W! Now my MacBook is completely silent in all tasks, when previously I could hear the fans through my headphones during screen shares and zoom calls! And I haven't noticed any performance drop! And remember, there are two different Low Power Modes, one for on battery, and one for when plugged into Power Adapter. It's in System Preferences > Battery > Power Adapter> Low Power Mode or System Preferences > Battery > Battery > Low Power Mode. Don't forget Battery and Power Adapter have separate low power modes! I just enabled both for simplicity. So what are you waiting for? Upgrade to Monterey! And even if you have a different laptop with or without these issues, you can still expect a bump in battery life with low power mode! Thankfully, Apple hasn't abandoned us Intel users even after all the new M1s came out. (However, please note that for some reason, after enabling low power mode, for some reason GPU wattage jumped up to 14W at idle at some point after messing with some settings and wouldn't go back down to 6W. Disabling low power mode and restarting solved this issue for me and haven't had the issue since. So if low power mode doesn't work for you, disable it, restart, and try again.) AppleTV app not keeping audio configurations Posted: 12 Mar 2022 04:39 PM PST The system language of my MacBook is set to Portuguese, but I like to watch movies and TV Series in their original audio, especially for learning English. But every time I start a new stream, I need to change the language from Portuguese to whatever I want. For movies that's not a problem, but it is annoying watching a TV Series and having to change the language for every episode. Binge watching is a nightmare. Weirdly, the subtitles do not share this problem. Any ideas how to fix that? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Mar 2022 11:25 AM PST Hi all. I am looking for an app (similar to LR for photos) to catalogue, view and manage family videos I have accumulated on an external drive over the years. Many different formats, some DSLRs, iPhone and other digital formats, MP4s, MOVs etc. Is iMovie the right app? Seems like I need to import the originals into iMovie which stores the video files in the iMovive file as a container. Or some other app? Adobe Bridge? Lightroom? Thanks [link] [comments]
Monterey Title/Menu bar size !? Posted: 12 Mar 2022 10:23 AM PST Just upgraded from Big Sur to Monterey, and immediately remembered that I had to fix the increased title/menu bar size (had to reduce it due to the large size taking too much space up on my 13" MacBook pro ) when I went to Big Sur from Catalina. This was completed by a terminal command to set 'NSWindowSupportAutomaticInlineTitle -bool false' - all worked great across every window/Title bar across the OS; I was happy. Now, I've just gone to Monterey the mammoth is back. It just uses far too much space on my 13" and looks ugly IMO. Any one know how to know reduce this again in Monterey !? Tried the same command and and half an hour Googling, but can't find anything. Am I out of luck !? 😒 [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Mar 2022 03:59 PM PST My iCloud is full and has over 1.44TB of Photos and Videos, is there some way to sort photos by metadata? Ideally I could delete only photos taken with a real camera, but Apple doesn't make this easy. Currently I'm downloading everything to an external drive but IDK what I'll do next. Desktop image - file name and location appearing across the image. Posted: 12 Mar 2022 03:43 PM PST Hi. I was trying out and then deleted a desktop picture app but now the standard image files supplied appear as described in the title above. How can I stop this occurring? e.g. (24)/System/Library/Desktop Pictures/Solid Colors/Ocher.png is currently written across the screen. [link] [comments]

USB-C Port Connects and Disconnects While Charging Posted: 12 Mar 2022 09:22 AM PST Hello Friends, First, I pardon for my ignorance, I am still fairly new to the realm of computers. I have a Macbook Pro 2017 13 inches with two Thunderbolt 3 ports on Monterey 12.2.1. In the past few days, one of my USBC ports has started to connect and reconnect constantly while charging. At first, I thought it was my cable or my charging block but after trying other blocks and cables the issue persists. My other port charges just fine and I am even able to use my USBC Hub which requires two inputs however still cannot charge through that. The odd thing to me is my keyboard, external drive, and external display work when I use my Hub, just not able to charge. I have tried doing an SMC and NVRAM reset and neither seemed to work assuming I did them correctly. I also looked inside the port and it looks to be clean and in the same condition as the working one. If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful. Below are my computer's full specs and the USBC Hubs specs. If there is any more info I can provide that can help please let me know. -MacBook Pro: 13-inch, 2017 Two Thunderbolt 3 ports - Processor: 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 - Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB - Memory: 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 Cable and Wall Charging block are brand new apple chargers. What battery percentage should I shut my mac down on for a trip? Posted: 12 Mar 2022 01:03 PM PST As the title says, I'm going on a trip, tomorrow. Gonna be driving for about 8 hours, stopping at a hotel for the night, and then driving for about 6 hours the next day, twice, there and back. I'm taking my mac with me, and I was wondering what percentage I should shut it down on. If was 100% certain that I would use it at the first hotel, then I'd shut it down at like 100. But I'm not, and I heard that if you shut it down for a while if it's not at like 50 percent, the battery wouldn't be able to hold a charge. So I'm wondering [link] [comments]
Video Playback Issues on Everything Except Youtube Posted: 12 Mar 2022 12:35 PM PST Hey everyone, first time post here; I've been perusing this sub and googling about the Monterrey OS update and it slowing down the computer, etc. I've been lucky to update without any actual laptop issues (Macbook pro 2015), but with the update, every type of video player (streamable, anything on Reddit, phub) except for Youtube has ridiculous lag on the videos - not sure if it's a buffering issue or what. I've made sure my Wifi is working well (no issues other than video playback), Mac storage isn't a problem, and I've done a "restart" of the laptop. Any other suggestions? [link] [comments]
