What's a commonly misunderstood iPhone/iOS feature and the explanation to dispel it? Posted: 06 May 2021 03:09 PM PDT Commonly misunderstood: Background App Refresh. A lot of users think that BAR constantly refreshes apps in the background, therefore destroying battery life. It's almost always included in every "tips to save battery life" article or video online. Explanation of how it actually works, using some answers from a thread last year: Background App Refresh is not scheduled by developers to run in the middle of the night or when connected to power. As a developer, you can ask iOS to run a piece of code for you at some point when iOS decides it would be useful \(Apple bases this off a number of things: plugged in and Wifi-connected for instance, or running your Twitter client at 6:30am because you usually look at it first thing in the morning, etc\). The only thing you specify is the minimum amount of time before iOS should run a second refresh and that is "advisory only" - meaning that iOS will launch you whenever it decides, not the interval provided. [Apps aren't] continuously syncing in the background. It runs based on what iOS says it should run. The app can't be like "hey, start me up every 5 minutes" or something stupid like that. It basically starts up and then shuts down and iOS will start it again when it feels it should. My understanding is that it'll do it more frequently for apps you start frequently, and especially so when you consistently open it at the same time of the day. But it's not continuously opening in the background and consuming tons of battery. You'll likely notice no real difference in battery with it on or off. Finally here's a clip from WWDC where BAR was officially introduced. (In the event any of the above info is incorrect, let me know and I'll fix it.) Aside From The US and Japan What Markets Does The iPhone Dominate In? Posted: 06 May 2021 08:59 AM PDT I made an app for iPhone users to share photos and videos with each other around the world (think like iMessage meets Insta) and I've been doing research on where my users are so I can get a better understanding of them. The issue is I haven't been able to find any updated stats, most are around the time or before the X launched which is hard to go off of. I know that iPhones dominate in Japan and the US but I also saw some statistics that suggest Germany, China and the UK being big markets. I was gonna call it at those and focus attention to that but I talked to one of my users who's from the Netherlands and he told me that iPhones and Apple products are huge there which got me thinking, what other countries/markets am I missing? submitted by /u/bhope95 [link] [comments]
