Kids MacBook can see wife's data?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 10:37 AM PDT

Wife has a MacBook. We just got our 18 yo a MacBook. The kid said after she got it set up she could see all her mom's stuff. I asked for details and was told "bookmarks and stuff." I'm guessing she's seeing account info rather than content from the other MacBook, but I really don't know.

What in the Apple universe would enable this. Sharing an AppleId? (I don't use any Apple devices and am way out of my experience zone.)

    Posted: 16 May 2020 03:24 PM PDT

In university, decided on the $1,700 model with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD. Just wondering if the processor is right and if I should t bump the processor from an i5 to an i7.

Is it worth beefing up my MBP purchase?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:52 PM PDT

    Hi

I will be purchasing a new macbook (I previously had an air). I want to purchase a MBP 2020 (magic keys not butterfly) and am thinking of beefing up my purchase.

Is it worth putting an i7 processor in it? what about higher SSD storage? This will be for a 13 inch MBP.

I do a little gaming on the side, nothing too serious game wise though. It would be for work mainly, a little editing.

    Dream Macbook

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:52 PM PDT

Typing on my 2015, the last Macbook to have useful ports for me, I'm wondering how much would you pay to get the Macbook you actually want. What if instead of the touchbar, we got the now common touchscreen? On top of that, what if it had Type A USB ports, magsafe charger, sim card reader, even an HDMI? What could convince Apple to make something like this short of nothing? Is this something that's ever thought about?

Macbook Air 2020 in clamshell mode. Good enough?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 10:51 PM PDT

I'm trying to decide between the macbook air and pro 2020. My use case is likely similar to most; I don't see my self doing any serious programming or video editing.

Would the base model MBA be enough to support an external monitor, keyboard and mouse for typical use-cases, in clam-shell mode? For e.g. do I have to worry about it heating up or slowing down?

Would upgrading to the i5/ 16g RAM make a difference? Would getting a macbook pro improve the experience?

    Replacing my 16” MacBook Pro

    Posted: 16 May 2020 08:52 PM PDT

Got fed up with all the issues I've been having. Working in Adobe Illustrator and the computer crashing. Unexpectedly shutting down over night. Booting up, logging in only to require a force restart because it stays frozen on the login screen. I'm unable to get a solid connection with my headphone jack so a constant high pitch "hum" is audible (have tested with other devices on same cord/speakers with no issues).

Troubleshooting: I have reset the PRAM/NVRAM, SMC, and of course factory reset and nothing works. For the audio, I tried attaching ferrite clips to the wire in case it was RF interference, but that did nothing (didn't expect to as I mentioned above, it works fine on other devices).

These problems are crazy for a product that cost nearly $3,000 USD. Not to mention, my previous Mac that this one replaced went to my wife, and all of a sudden that one started making a "ticking" sound. Read online this is probably debris in the fans, but it's the icing on top. I love Apple products, but I've been having a lot of bad luck lately. Sorry for the rant, I just needed to vent.

Setup: MacBook Pro 16" 8-core Intel i9 16GB RAM 1TB SSD AMD Internal Dedicated Graphics w/ 4GB External Graphics Card Razer Core X AMD 5700XT 8GB

    Worth the buy?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 08:47 PM PDT

so I found this MacBook Pro on eBay for what seems like a great deal. would like some input to know whether its worth the risk, I noticed it doesn't not have a HDD installed I figure its because of confidential information they want to keep. I like some older MacBooks because they're some of the last upgradable MacBooks app makes anymore.
    TIA!

How do I use a microphone on my MacBook?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 07:42 PM PDT

I bought a microphone that plugs into the audio jack on my 2015 12 inch MacBook, but it doesn't seem to be working properly. The Mac reads the microphone as headphones too I guess so the computers speaker doesn't seem to work. I have no idea of knowing if the microphone is working right since the speakers don't play the sound. Anything helps

New to Mac, needing app recommendations!

    Posted: 16 May 2020 06:52 PM PDT

    Hello y'all,

I'm new to MacOS and just got myself a 2020 MacBook Air i5/8GB RAM/512GB SSD.

I'm looking for some app/program recommendations for anything that's essential.

I've been binging on YouTube videos and have downloaded TG Fan Pro, iStat Menus 6, and Turbo Boost Switcher thanks to Max Tech and now I'm just kinda sitting here thinking of what to do.

I'm used to Windows laptops/PCs so this is all super foreign to me.

I'm also interested to know... What do y'all use your computers for?

Is it worth fixing keybord on mid 2012 mbp?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 04:46 PM PDT

I'm having troubles where certain arrow keys don't work commas don't work and periods don't work Also occasionally the numbers and some other keys will type a symbol/different key in addition to the number For instance when this problem is occurring the '9' key will also type the up arrow key

Is it worth fixing the keyboard? Should I try doing it myself? Besides this issue the laptop works 100% fine and getting rid of it would be a last resort

    Thanks!

Preparing To Buy a 2015 MBP. Is There Diagnostic / Stress Test Software Available I Can Use To Test Integrity? What Should I Look Out For?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 04:38 PM PDT

    Specs: 2015 - MBP. 15" Retina / i7 / 256SSD / 16 GB/ Integrated Graphics Chip

    ______________________________________________________________

Hi. I'm purchasing a used MBP to hold me over until the ARM based MBP are ready in another year or two.

The seller appears to be someone who buys and works on laptops then flips them, so there may have been issues in its past. I would like a website or a piece of software I can load and run a full diagnostic + stress test the machine before handing over my money.

Also is there anything in particular I should be wary of in the 2015 models? I know 2016 > 2020 are basket cases with poorly developed engineering and testing, which is why I am avoiding the latest generation at any costs.

Several years ago I purchased a used 2010 MBP and got burned a bit. 3-4x a day it would have a kernel panic and reboot. The cause was the discreet graphics card. I was finally able to solve it by finding a small piece of code that essentially kept the discreet card all the time, but this of course made the machine run slower on graphics heavy content or if I used dual monitors. Would like to avoid this.

Another 13" MBP likely in 2020?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 10:02 AM PDT

Apple often names their laptops like "Early 2020" or "Mid 2015".

What are the chances that another update (if minor) will be made to the 13" MBP this year?

    2020 13" MacBook Pro i5 vs i7 is the $200 worth it?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 07:21 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade to the 2020 13" Macbook Pro 16gb/512gb and have been going back and forth on whether the upgrade to the i7 chip is worth the $200. From most of the research I've done online, it seems not to be. I don't do a lot of CPU heavy tasks daily, and the most intensive thing I do is probably CAD design (Fusion 360). I know it's still early and there isn't a lot of benchmarking data to have a real consensus, but I just wanted to gather more input. Thanks in advance for the help!'

Edit: I should also say that money isn't a real issue, but if I don't need to spend the extra $200, I'd prefer not to.

Comparing equally priced 2020 MBA with MBP

    Posted: 16 May 2020 09:08 AM PDT

The Air's size, weight, and simplicity appeals. The Pro's ability to deal with heat and therefore not have annoying fans blaring also appeals a lot.

Similarly priced ones would mean 2.0GHz 10th gen i5 on the Pro vs 1.2GHz 10th gen i7 on the Air.

Realistically, what difference are we talking there?

Both would have 16GB RAM. Although 32GB on the Pro would be very tempting.

I really want to avoid fan noise when watching videos and having multiple Chrome tabs open. I don't mind it kicking in when doing hard work like music production.

Vibration feeling when charging 2019 16" MacBook. Are the new MacBook chargers capable of grounding?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:48 AM PDT

I have a 2019 16" Macbook and it has a weird vibration feeling when being charged. I was wondering if buying the Power adapter extension cable will the grounding prong will be able to ground the new 96w adapters to stop that weird tingling/vibration feeling from my Mac when charging it?

    Thanks!

Purchase advice requested: RE: 2020 MBP/MBA

    Posted: 16 May 2020 02:47 PM PDT

    Hi all!
I am looking for a way to purchase either a 2020 MBP or a 2020 MBA, but without paying sales tax. Used to be able to purchase Macs from B&N Photo & Video without paying sales tax, because I was in a different state (North Carolina), but you can't do that anymore.

Anyone got any ideas as to any other sellers that sell new Macs tax free?

    2015 15" MBP vs 2020 MBA

    Posted: 16 May 2020 10:59 AM PDT

You have owned or currently own an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, but have never owned a Mac.

You have been a life-long PC user, because you never understood people who spend thousands more for a Mac when you can get a PC device for so much less, but you have finally decided to give Macs a shot, to experience the device, OS, and the full "Apple ecosystem."

You do not care about having the latest and greatest, and do not expect for a Mac to last you a decade, but you want it to at least last you three years. And, if you are going to spend $$$ on something, you want to get the best value for the money.

You will be doing some photo/video editing. You want to eventually learn how to code. You do not plan on gaming on it, as you have a PC and console for that.

You do not care about how slim or bulky it is, nor do you care about how light or heavy it is.

You can be about that dongle life, but will prefer not to if it can be avoided.

You are not interested in the touch bar. You want to avoid the butterfly keyboard.

You have about $1,000 to spend.

    Your choices are:

    • 2020 MacBook Air
      • 1.1GHz dual-core 10th-generation Intel Core i3 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
      • 8GB (or 16GB for $180)
      • 256GB SSD (or 512GB for $200)
      • $899 to $1,279 with student discount
    • 2020 MacBook Air
      • 1.1GHz quad-core 10th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
      • 8GB (or 16GB for $180)
      • 256GB SSD (or 512GB for $200)
      • $999 to $1,379 with student discount
    • 2015 15" MacBook Pro
      • 2.8GHz quad-core 4th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
      • 16GB
      • 512GB SSD
      • AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5 SDRAM and an Intel Iris Pro 5200 with 128 MB of "Crystalwell" embedded DRAM
      • $1,000 to $1,300 used

    What will you buy?

    EDIT: Prices

What kind of external HDD or SSD does r/macbook Use?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 09:24 AM PDT

Recently purchased a new macbook pro to use as a work machine. For those of you that use time machine and wanna make sure your data is backed up? Do you believe HDD or SSD is better? Does it matter? I was looking into this tiny one to keep things simple. (And plus you need to keep it in all the time to keep your data backed up so something less bulky would be great) The SSD on my previous macbook air completely died on me one day a few years back with no means of recovery so I'm not fuckin around anymore. lol

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087PW4WHM/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

I'm also looking into getting an additional one (probably SSD because I've heard they're faster) to work off of for project files to keep the mac's HDD as clean as possible. I'm mostly planning to do work in logic, sibelius and final cut which notoriously have dummy thicc projec file sizes.

What say you r/macbook? What have you found works best for you?
