Magic Keyboard And UBC-C PD (Fast Charge)

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 07:53 AM PDT

Just received a Magic Keyboard today and was curious whether it would be able to super charge the iPad.

iPad is 79% charged. When I plug the cable to the iPad, I read 14.8V, 1.07A: https://i.imgur.com/ZqADbvW.jpg

When plugging the Smart Keyboard, the readings are 8.69V, 2.29A: https://i.imgur.com/d7YAG1B.jpg

So it seems that the Magic Keyboard negociates different voltage than the iPad itself, but the amount of power delivered to the iPad is the same.

I am using a 61W Apple power adapter with a USB-C Apple cable. Maybe it would be interesting to see how this work with different power adapters.

Is the new Magic Keyboard right for you?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 03:03 AM PDT

I've used my Magic Keyboard (11 inch) for a few hours now. Given the high price of this product and having seen some comments about cancelling orders or people just generally unsure if this product is right for them, I thought I would help clear some concerns up.

    Weight -

It adds about 600 grams (11 inch version). It's not unbearably heavy, combined with the iPad it has the same weight and feel as a very light notebook. This added weight is unavoidable. A laptop by design carries its weight at the bottom with the screen above it being as thin and light as possible. The iPad does not have this luxury. In the years iPad cases have existed we have seen every variation of kick stands and folios. All of which have failed the lap test or offer limited features. The Magic Keyboard is heavier but it provides something I've not had with any other case. Stability.

    'I'm cancelling, I'll just use a bluetooth keyboard, trackpad 2 and a stand' -

Okay, great! Maybe this product was never for you. The Magic Keyboards primary purpose is to make a portable all in one version of those three things. If you don't need the portability of it then the product isn't for you. Save your money! (Seriously, this thing costs a fortune). If you only use your ipad in one or two locations and can get away with just a fixed setup on your desk, great! If however, you move around your city throughout the day for work, constantly change lecture halls or travel on planes/trains etc. This is the case for you. Nothing else for iPad Pro offers this.

You can't lay it flat -

This is a big one for a lot of people. This keyboard is designed like this because Apple believes that the iPad's touch experience is at its best when the iPad is used 'naked'. Whilst I'm inclined to agree with them there. I hate laying my iPad flat on a table. It feels awful. Fortunately its not something I ever do in my day to day uses so I should be fine. If this is something you do, you may want to look elsewhere or simply lay the iPad on the closed case, it works fine.

The hinge is really limited -

It covers every viewing position you would reasonably use. I've tried it on my lap, on a desk and lying down in bed. It's great guys. Really. Its also the sturdiest case I've ever used by a mile.

My other thoughts on the case

    • The typing experience is the best i've had for iPad. Its laptop quality.
    • The smaller trackpad size hasn't bothered me as I expected
    • Opening the keyboard with one hand is a no go
    • The iPad is solid when attached to the keyboard. Touch still works great
    • No Apple Pencil protection (I will always hate this but have made peace with it)
    • The build quality is excellent as you would expect at this price.
    • It is very expensive. Overpriced? Yes.

Hope that helps anyone with those main concerns. This thing is great but very expensive. Be sure its right for you before ordering or wait for your local store to reopen and test it out yourself.

PSA: Easy fix for certain chars not being usable on the new Logitech Combo Touch trackpad/keyboard case

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 01:39 PM PDT

Took all day to figure this out, and it was really frustrating. I love the case but was baffled by the fact that &, ', |, and \ were all untypable. It was clearly a software issue because " worked despite being on the same physical key as '. 😕

ANYWAY - very easy to fix.

Connect the keyboard, go to the Settings app, open General → Keyboard → Hardware Keyboard. The top option there is set to Automatic, which is where the issue lies. Manually select your home country's keyboard layout and it'll enable those keys for you.

    Protection for Magic/Smart Keyboard?

Since the material Apple uses on their keyboard cases doesn't hold up the best, are there any skins or cases to protect the 2020 editions yet?

Responding to an archived discussion regarding Apple Pencil gesture sensitivity, how to adjust

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 12:23 PM PDT

Hi there, I noticed this (archived) post in r/iPad and wanted to respond to it, but unfortunately could not:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/comments/bqjl73/apple_pencil_2_double_tap_sensitivity/

Here is a quick Apple Support article on changing this value, has solved the issue for me:

    https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/apple-pencil-ipad63913965/ipados

I hope this finds some of the responders to the original post. This adjustment makes using Procreate pretty mint. For those that use Procreate for taking notes, I have some recommended settings that I had to dig pretty deep to find. If there is interest I can write up my recommended settings for turning Procreate into the notes application that has worked out better for me than the many other alternatives I have tried.
