| Mojave reverts wallpapers after reboot to a state that was set months ago Posted: 26 Nov 2019 01:33 AM PST I have a three display setup: 5K iMac (late 2014, macOS 10.14.6) and two Dell 24" screens with DisplayPort connection. After reboot most of the time the spaces on the external displays are interchanged and the wallpapers are being reset to a state of last month or something (not the macOS default wallpaper). I mostly use plain colors as wallpapers and sometimes it's a total random color after reboot. Does anybody have an idea what's going on here? [link] [comments]  | ||
| File extension selected when saving Posted: 25 Nov 2019 11:04 PM PST Unless my memory has failed me, the save prompt used to select the text of the file name but not the extension prior to Catalina. Now, when I choose to save something, all of the file name and extension text is selected so simply typing results in saving a file without its extension. Is there any way of changing this? Eg. If the default was Untitled.jpg, simply typing in Mojave would result in myName.jpg. Now, it'll start with Untitled.jpg but result in myName. [link] [comments]  | ||
| Posted: 25 Nov 2019 10:10 PM PST Out of nowhere, this afternoon my Mac has started displaying some strange behaviour. All of a sudden whenever I clicked on a link in a webpage, it would try to 'download' it (shows as a link in the download folder). It gets weirder though. The same thing happens in chrome! My computer is also doing some other strange things: there is extra details showing in the wifi menu, not all the apps I have open are showing in app exposes, and bartender is not working. | Upgrade to macOS catalina removes all my notes on mac, how can i retrieve them? Posted: 26 Nov 2019 01:19 AM PST How can i retrieve my notes? I use the notes app on Mac to keep track of many things, addresses, my tasks, status of things i am working on personal reflection and more. I have not used the cloud service, since i dislike the idea of my personal stuff being stored somewhere online. Yesterday my mac slowed down on moments and in ways (without running large programs) that i was not able to understand, so i decided to upgrade to catalina. As a result i lost 2 years of notes that i made. Because of this i am both sad and spitefull towards mac since. i consider apple to be a top tier brand and guess i expected more of the software that runs on it as well. as in, even if i do not use your cloud service then i still do not expect you to throw away 2 years of files. Does someone here know a way in which i can retrieve these files? ( before i spend a full day digging through obscure system files ). [link] [comments]  | ||
| What do I do now? 2013 27” iMac with NVIDIA GTX775M Posted: 25 Nov 2019 11:22 AM PST I've recently been catching up on all the drama around NVIDIA and Apple, sorry that I'm incredibly late to the party. I'm currently running Catalina and have started to see some very real slow downs and issues with programs that would otherwise run fine. I was trying to install and play DOS2 just recently and realized that in the fine print, the NVIDIA GPUs are not supported which ultimately led me down this rabbit hole. I'm trying to figure out the best way to have keep this iMac but have it run more effectively like it use to. After some looking around, I feel like my best option is to roll back to High Sierra and live out the rest of this Macs days in that realm or until I can afford a new unit. I do love this iMac and it's isn't "that old" yet... just looking for some advice in case there is something else I should consider. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments]  | ||
| WAS MY INFORMATION STOLEN??!?! Posted: 26 Nov 2019 12:13 AM PST For most of 2019, I had been using the free version of Betternet VPN on my iPhone. I did not have many problems with it. However, I came across this review:https://thebestvpn.com/reviews/betternet/ In this review the author, Rob Mardisalu, says, "It's undoubtedly popular, but Betternet might not be as secure as it seems. In 2017, several outlets reported the result of an academic study on VPN apps and whether they might be injecting malware or adware—or just not providing the security they advertised. Betternet was ranked among the ten worst. Many of the other apps in that list were removed from the app store, but Betternet is still around. So far, I haven't been able to find any evidence of Betternet injecting malware or doing anything else nefarious. But the fact that an academic study identified them as suspect is very worrying. As you can see, Betternet has more downloads than all of the other free VPN apps combined, which does lend it a bit of credibility. However, we'd much prefer that its AV-rank be significantly better than 13." This immediately alarmed me. I did more research and found this article:https://www.bestvpn.co/reviews/betternet-vpn/ in which the author, Muhammad Hamza Shahid, says, "However, Betternet's reputation has gone downhill since a CSIRO study revealed the provider sells adverts to users, which permit the installing of cookies onto devices." This was very troubling. I did some more research and went to the study that was repeatedly being cited. It appears that the article delt only with apps on the Google Play Store and on Android devices and not with apps on the Apple App Store. I believe this because the article said, "In this paper we provide a first comprehensive analysis of 283 Android apps that use the Android VPN permission, which we extracted from a corpus of more than 1.4 million apps on the Google Play store." The section in the study dealing with Betternet is 4.2, if anyone cares to do anymore research. (Also, it should be noted that this study is from 2016, so Betternet might have made gotten rid of these threats since then). Upon all of this new information, I deleted Betternet off of my iphone and I also deleted it off of my MacBook. I used both the free and paid versions on my MacBook, so my MacBook might not have been at as much risk as my iPhone (Some websites said the info in the CSIRO study only applied to the free version). I also ran Malwarebytes on my MacBook, while I had Betternet, and it found no threats, so everything might have been ok. So I have a few questions for you guys. Does the stuff mentioned in the CSIRO study apply to the IOS app or does it only apply to the Android app? Betternet has been approved by Apple and it is one of the highest rated VPN apps on the Apple App Store. Apple verifies each of the apps on its App Store to make sure they do not contain malware, viruses, or anything like that. So I think my information may not have been compromised. Also, Malwarebytes did not detect any threats on my MacBook. However, if I was exposed to the risks outlined in the CSIRO study, how worried should I be? Could critical information such as photos, videos, passwords, files, screenshots, and account data have been collected by third parties? Is there any way I can tell if my information was collected? I'm jumping on a redeye tonight and I'd like to download a few movies to watch offline. "No problem," I told my girlfriend this morning; "I think all the streaming services do that now." I use Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime; none of them seem to offer me an option to download videos for offline view (though they do on iOS). Is there any (legal) solution out there? | Help! Chrome in MacOS constantly having connection issues. Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:50 PM PST I'm having an issue with Chrome as of yesterday, anytime I'm trying to visit a website I am getting this message, " your connection was interrupted" with nothing loaded, and after a few seconds it refreshes itself and loads the page. I'm not having any connection issues with Safari, so I'm not sure whats going on? I've deleted Chrome, restarted my computer, but nothing is working? | Catalina Music App and iCloud Music Library is a CLUSTERF*CK Posted: 25 Nov 2019 02:57 AM PST So, this Saturday I spend around 8 hours sorting and renaming playlists, and adding songs to my Music.app in Catalina. After doing so, I noticed that both my iPhone X and my iPad Pro would not get all the changes. They would get some newly created stuff like new music folders but those were empty (where in macOS they were filled with playlists). I quit Music.app reopened it and did an iCloud Library update from the menu and that made all newly made AND older playlists in the music folder I was working on disappear completely. So I lost all 8 hours and all of my playlists. Now Music.app would not even sync newly created stuff to other devices. I have a broken library that does not sync (or partially syncs anymore). EDIT: Oh and iCloud Photos library is acting up as well, half of the time photos will not sync across devices, scrolling through library will show pixelated photos. Double clicking on them will bring up the pixelated photos with an exclamation mark on the lower right corner. Nothing feels stable, and I am afraid to roll back to mojave because I am afraid of what catalina synced to iCloud servers that is not backwards compatible. Thank you Apple. [link] [comments]  | ||

| Battery Problem: why is my MacBook Battery draining over night? Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:19 PM PST Recently I discovered a strange behaviour on my MacBook Air (2018). For example yesterday evening around 10 p.m. I shut the Mac down. Usually I keep it in sleep mode with power supply connected, but when I travel, I shut it down completely. Today, when turning it back on again, after less than 24 hours, the battery was at 0%! I had the same behaviour observed about a week ago, but that time I wasn't sure, whether I really had switched it off (shut it down) or maybe kept it in sleep mode. However, I'm pretty sure that I shut it down properly yesterday, and both times the battery was at 0% after less than 24 hours. Is this normal? The MacBook isn't even a year old. Battery monitor shows health at 99.3% after 25 loading cycles. How could I possibly see what process or program was consuming my battery while the Mac was turned off (stupid question maybe) and why is it being consumed at all when the machine is supposed to be turned off? I am still on MacOS Mojave 10.14.6 as I didn't dare yet switching to Catalina after all the stories I read here. [link] [comments]  | ||

| The highlight color does not change in Preview Posted: 25 Nov 2019 12:30 PM PST I'm using the Preview app to read pdf. In my use to date, when I right-click to change the color of the highlighted location, I could use the color I changed in the next highlighting process. However, after the last update, the color changes I made with the right-click now make the next highlight again in the old color. I can change the highlight color from the top right pen mark, but it's not as practical as right-clicking. [link] [comments]  | ||

It's currently the background on my iPhone 11, my iPad Pro, and my iMac. For some reason when I go into photos and select the photo and try to make it the desktop picture on the new MacBook Air I get the following error: Unable to make resource locally available: <PLInternalResource: 0x7f804b0f10f0> { assetUUID: 0A8810BF-48DC-4D3B-AC5E-A1A8F79106F The actual error is much longer... | Dell monitor 2k U2713hb scaling and resolution issues Posted: 25 Nov 2019 09:40 AM PST I know there are several threads concerning 2k-4k monitors and Dell monitors, especially with using the HDMI port which limits the maximum resolution to 1920x1080 instead of the native 2560 x 1440, unless the monitor color space is changed in some driver file. I have resolved the issue by using the minidisplay port instead of the HDMI port on my MacBook Pro 2015. So I can set the monitor to its proper resolution 2560 x 1440. The problem is with the scaling at lower resolutions, I would like to chose 1280x720 in HiDPI mode, to keep the 16:9 ratio, which is shown by RDM as available in HiDPI mode, but when I select it nothing happens. So I am forced to use a resolution in a different aspect ratio and I get two large horizontal bars on the sides because not all the screen estate is used. Instead if I select "720p" from the Displays menu all the screen is used but text is blurry across all apps. It's quite puzzling. Also tried SwitchResX but same problems. It's strange because under Windows I can select 1280x720 without problems. Does anyone have an idea why and if there is a fix? I am on Catalina but had the same problem before upgrading.
