PSA: For 14"/16" MBP owners that use Chrome, disable hardware acceleration to get smooth 120 hz scrolling

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 12:51 PM PST

I don't know why this works or what is going on here, but I have had trouble with Chrome scrolling at ProMotion smoothness since macOS 12.2 and Chrome 98. It seems very choppy at default settings. However I saw this tip on the Chrome dev forums, that if you disable hardware acceleration (in Settings->Advanced->System) then suddenly it runs completely smooth just like Safari.

It seems to peg the CPU a bit more when in use and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a measurable impact on battery life for doing this. The Chrome devs seem to feel this behavior is a bug that will likely improve in later versions of macOS (maybe 12.3?) but if you're on public releases and want that "buttery smoothness" this seems to be the way.

    Impact of the Watch

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 09:21 AM PST

TL;DR Watch is making me a changed man (for the better).

Context: Mid 2020, 3 months of being locked in the house and managing a big digital operation from an office chair. I, big and middle-aged man that was already very overweight, became so overweight that I couldn't walk more than half a kilometre without being exhausted.

My aerobic fitness was so shot that the thought of walking to the local takeaway was enough to turn me off. Add supermarket deliveries being bloody convenient (including plenty of beer) and no real need to venture out the house and I was pretty much fucked.

My S/O was so worried that she insisted I started working on myself. I listened and agreed - time to fix things. I purchased a Watch 6 and a 'smart scale' with the sole intention of better tracking my health and fitness. Setting up and regularly checking the Health stats etc. was a real eye-opener. I realised I was genuinely in a bad way.

    Roll on 2022.

This week I have been on a 2 km walk practically every week day. I have lost two stone from my 'peak' and can now run up stairs when I want to. I know that is small gains, but for me the fact that I check my stats every day? Massive eye-opener and a genuine life-saver so far. My average 1km time has gone from over 24 minutes (so under 3 km/hr walking pace) to 15 minutes (4 km/hr walking pace). My average daily steps (tracked by iPhone before getting the watch) have gone from around 1200 during April 2020 (full lockdown in UK) to 4500 in January 2022.

My goals are now clear: Get to 7000 steps a day, get to 4,5km/hr walking pace (average human being walking speed) and lose another 3 stone by December 2022.

Beyond that the goal is to maintain both steps and pace, whilst getting my weight down to my year 25 weight (135 kg). All because the Apple Watch is keeping me motivated and aware.

PS. I am sure I could have got a Samsung watch or Fitbit, but I am already embedded in the Apple Sphere, hence this choice. IF you are in a similar boat, get one...

Warning: files on iCloud drive are not safe!

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 11:48 AM PST

tldr: files on iCloud drive can suddenly disappear with no option to recover. Do not use it for anything you don't want to lose!

Was using iCloud for the past decade as a persistent storage for my study notes, book collection, important official documents (e.g. tax declarations, work contracts), save data for games, etc., to make sure I can access everything from all my Mac/iOS/Windows devices whenever needed. There was a hiccup few years back when I noticed that all my saved books disappeared (only the empty folders with categories remained), but I did not pay attention to it as other important things were intact. And then today I was looking for some important documents and saw that all my files accumulated in over a decade are gone! The folder structure is still there, but all folders are now empty. And there is no way to recover anything in the "recently deleted".

This is a common problem (just google for "iCloud files disappeared") with no solution, and Apple support is completely helpless. Don't know how Apple did not fix this yet and why it does not even warn people about the possibility of losing their data. In my view, completely unacceptable.

So in short, do not trust iCloud with anything important, move your data away from it as soon as you can, and always try to keep a physical backup. And I hope this post will somehow save others from losing their digital possessions accumulated over the years (but will probably get buried only for some new victim to find it in google when they suffer the same issue).

    Apple Product Reputation

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 04:11 PM PST

Teacher here. Today my high school seniors remarked that "Apple products are known for not lasting long." I responded to the contrary. They vigorously defended their position and acted like I crazy and just an Apple fanboy. Am I off on this one? I was always under the impression that Apple products were generally known for longevity. For context, MacBooks were the trigger for the convo. But they also said the same about iPhones. Help enlighten me r/Apple.

Edit: Wow. As a long time lurker on this sub (recently switched to a new Reddit account), I am beyond amazed at all of these thoughtful responses. In response to a few common comments....I will add that in no way was I unsettled or bothered by the interaction with my students. I've taught teenagers long enough to know better than that. Haha. The interaction was also cordial, as I am lucky enough to teach really kind kids. So, to be clear, I was not trying to find evidence to clap back at them, but more so just interested in learning more about Apple's overall reputation in in terms of product longevity within the tech community. Also, comments pointing out the bias of this subreddit are very fair, and I will certainly take that into account. You all are awesome. Many cheers!

Lack of incentive for companies to make iPad apps!

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 08:10 AM PST

Apple make out that iPads are a replacement for a laptop and a bigger version of the iPhone but the apps don't match that. It seems there's no incentive for developers to build iPad apps anymore. No WhatsApp for iPad, no instagram then all these new app only banks, stocks and shares apps. They all only have apps for iPhone. I don't want to download a shrunken mobile version on my iPad! Apple needs to do more to enable PWA on iPad and/or during the iOS app development phase force iPad support. Make them automatically resize idk but they gotta do something!!!

    HomePod mini sound..

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 02:43 PM PST

Am I the only one that thinks the sound isn't impressive at all.. like a lot of songs sound pretty low for a 100 dollar speaker… or is their a setting I have to turn on or off to make it louder?? Cause even the google nest mini it replaced got much louder and the base wasn't as good but was good enough..
