Today is the 13th anniversary of the unveiling of the @Apple iPhone by Steve Jobs, with its novel design that used ten-finger multitouch instead of keyboard or stylus. It was a monumental day in tech history. I was there and was blown away.

The Smart Battery Case, a long term conclusion.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 12:39 PM PST

From the moment I bought my iPhone XS Max I bought my Smart Case, which was Feb of 2019, and in the coming few days I'll be upgrading to the 12 Pro Max. I'll be talking briefly here about my experience and I won't get to scientific numbers as I did not prepare myself from day 1 to write this.

So for what is already a big of a phone the case was an addition of weight and volume in general, but for someone gifted with big hands it took me a couple of days to get familiar with it, but every time I hand my phone to anyone I'm reminded of how unfamiliar it is to other people, especially if they were using it for long phone calls.

Usually my day starts at around 5 AM and ends around 10:30 to 11:00 PM, and through out my day I move a lot as I usually hit my work in an agricultural station and I use my phone for data collection and I take photos and sometimes videos as a tool of research, I'm an R&D professional, then sometimes I go to the laboratory and use the phone for data collection too. After my work is done I hit the gym and most of the time I film myself as I do my weightlifting workouts to take notes on my form and progressions. Finally I may go out with friends for dinner or social gatherings ( Remember when that was normal?). Add to all of that the heavy use of social messaging apps, Instagram and Reddit and I'm usually left 35-50 percent of battery. Sometimes when I have a lot of phone calls it drops to less than 20 percent. You may also be noted that most of the time I'm on mobile network not WiFi.

So after 2 years of usage I can say the following:

    • The added benefits of the case are far superior to the drawbacks that comes from the strange shape and weight.
    • After using the case for 14 months it started showing weird symptoms of connecting and disconnecting to the phone simultaneously which was solved by the Authorised retailer with a new case.
    • The battery health indicator showed the health of my battery as 100 until the weird thing happened and I took off the case for almost a month until the new one arrived. Which accounts for more than 13 months of continuous usage. Then it started degrading even though I used the new case and never depleted my phone to less than 4 percent. Now it is at 88.
    • The case my cause a disturbance to your network usage which may require you to restart the phone or turning airplane mode off and on.
    • I've noticed that the case may reduce the phone signal and the quality of it.
    • Sometimes the case may cause some hiccups to your phone which is solved by a restart or removing and putting the case back again.

And that's it for a wrap. I hope that you enjoyed it.

Clarifying some confusion with Apple extending the purchase window for AppleCare+

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 04:22 AM PST

In the United States and Canada, Apple had expanded the eligibility window for AppleCare+ from 60 days to the full year, however I've seen a lot of incorrect information being passed around as to the eligibility and the process. Here are a few key disclaimers:

    • it can only be done at a physical Apple Store location, Apple Support will not be able to help

    • if it is beyond 60 days, you will need to have a Genius Bar reservation in order to have it inspected, as a sales specialist would be unable to assist you

    • if there is any physical or liquid damage, you will have to pay the out of warranty cost for the repair/replacement before being able to purchase AppleCare+

    • if the device has been swapped while in warranty, logistically it is no longer considered a purchased product, and there would be no way to purchase AppleCare+, meaning you are stuck with only the one year warranty
