How the fuck is this not planned obsolescence? (1st gen iPad Pro 12.9")

    Posted: 29 Sep 2017 11:08 AM PDT

Let me preface this by saying that I'm aware older hardware lagging behind newer software isn't necessarily planned obsolescence, but I really can't wrap my head around this.

While I didn't participate in the first beta for iOS 11, from what I've read online, the 1st generation iPad Pro (12.9") was able to have 3 apps running simultaneously on the screen at once (i.e., 2 apps in split view, and 1 in slide over) with all 3 apps being usable. Now I'm not certain if this was really the case, but if it was, it means Apple intentionally removed this feature from later builds of iOS 11 for the 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9", only allowing the 3rd app to be used, graying out the other 2.

The 2nd generation iPad Pro 12.9" supports the original all-three-accessible implementation of this version of multitasking, with the only difference in its specifications having an updated SoC. Other than some other minor changes, it still has 4GBs of memory, which I suspect is more important when it comes to multitasking.

Now, when the 1st generation came out, Apple kept touting about how it was a laptop replacement, boosts your productivity, etc., and while iOS 11 looked promising to live up to that goal, the fact that iOS 11 on the 1st generation iPad Pro can't even have fucking Notes, Mail, and Settings open at the same time raises some eyebrows.

If the 1st generation iPad Pro has the same 4GBs of RAM as the 2nd generation, albeit with a slightly less powerful processor (and the A9X was, and still is a powerful chip), why the flying fuck does it need to grey out 2 of the apps below?

I'm sure a lot of Apple fanboys and Apple themselves would rationalize this as, "oh, the A9X just couldn't do it in a satisfactory manner," but I feel like that's a cop out.

If Apple originally (and continues to) market the iPad Pro as a "laptop replacement," then they should provide laptop-like software updates, that don't gimp the older generations and seemingly encourage you to get the latest iteration. While maybe more computationally trivial, this whole poor implementation of multitasking on the 1st gen iPad Pro would be analogous to Apple disabling/graying out running apps when opening notification center on macOS, making it work as it should only on the latest MacBooks.

I think Apple makes great products, but this sort of shit has to stop. I can understand to some extent why they stop trying to optimize iOS for older iterations of iPhones (they do, after all have a faster turnaround than iPads). But older iPad Pros, specifically when they're being marketed as a "Pro" device, shouldn't be neglected from noticeable, beneficial improvements to the product like this. If Apple is trying to incentivize consumers to upgrade to the latest model, this seems like an extremely scummy way to do it. And if you consider at how much less often people update their tablets, seems like a poor solution to garner more sales.

EDIT: Here's a video demonstrating this feature on the 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9" on the iOS 11 beta from back in June. This is how it is now after the GM release (akin to an iPad Air 2).

Anyone know if there's a way to format JSON responses in Safari? I don't think there is, but was curious if anyone had found something that worked for them.

    iPad Pro 10.5 back cover?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2017 10:00 AM PDT

I'm looking for a full back cover for the 10.5 iPad. Issue is that all the back covers I've seen have an opening for the Smart Cover, which I don't use. Any suggestions are welcome!

    Apple Pencil disconnecting

    Posted: 29 Sep 2017 04:22 AM PDT

After updating to iOS 11, my Apple Pencil seems to be disconnecting if I don't use it for a while. I have to keep plugging into the iPad to connect, and it's never out of battery. Anyone else having a similar problem/figured out a way to solve it?

    Help choosing first iPad

    Posted: 29 Sep 2017 01:55 PM PDT

Hey all, never owned an iPad before and there are so many now I'd love help choosing what's best for me.

I have an iPhone and have always had them since the iPhone 3GS, although I've always been a non-apple user for PC/Laptop.

I'd love an iPad primarily for reading comics/graphic novels on it, but also for basic internet use, Netflix, and playing card games on it (hearthstone similar games)

I know I don't need the iPad Pro, but I'm also not even certain I need the newest non-pro model. The tech specs of the iPad are confusing to me, so I was hoping someone would be able to help me here. Hopefully I am in the right place!

As long as I am able to use a keyboard attachment and it has good battery with it I'll be happy.

    Looking for used iPad suggestions

    Posted: 28 Sep 2017 04:09 PM PDT

I'm not too familiar with the iPad family of products and with so many out there I'm not sure what would be the best fit. I basically would use it for watching shows and as an e-reader while on the plane (I fly once a month , sometimes overseas). I'm not trying to spend too much on something I'll use once a month so I was thinking a used iPad hopefully to save $ .. any suggestions on make/model/where to buy ?

    iPad vs iPad Pro (2017)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2017 03:25 PM PDT

For the context, I am a college student, so my budget is pretty limited, but I decided that I would want to purchase an iPad for note-taking, reduce the weight of my backpack and the whole.

I did some research and finally come back to the 2017 9.7 iPad and 10.5 iPad Pro. Which one should I get, and which stylus would be the best for note-taking?

Edit 1: thanks guys for the suggestions, further more, should I go with the base model, 64gb or the middle-of-the-line 256?

Are there different screens used on the 2017 ipad 9.7 inch (ipad 5)?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2017 03:54 PM PDT

I repurchased an ipad 2017 and for some reason the screen looks worst than my last one. It's the same exact model as my previous ipad so I'm kind of confused as to why this one doesn't look as crisp. Did apple use different screens in this ipad model?
